Want to make this post as maybe it will help other users that they think they got a faulty RTX 3000 cards, so if you have this similar issue you can breath relax because your graphic card its ok, the faulty are the nvidia drivers, like any version looks like only afect RTX 3000 series.

There is a issue with artifacts, black/white squares or dots flickering in desktop and 2D mode like more than 1 year old already with RTX 3000 series cards.

At first I tought my RTX 3070 was faulty, so I RMA and I receveid a new RTX 3070 but have same issue. I had the RTX 3070 with the issue from feb 2021 and now from july 2022 I have a new RTX 3080 and after 2 weeks of use, I got the issue again, also in the RTX 3080, so with this card, I tested 3 different cards that all of them has the issue. For me its triggered like 1 per month lets say, and you have to restart PC in order to fix it. I changed DP cable like 3 times aswell just in case.
There is another guy here that posted time ago this issue, he said he RMA his card aswell and the issue triggered for him aswell with the new graphic card.

The issue is very random, there is no chance to reproduce it, the funny fact is that it will have everytime same patron I mean everytime there are some squares that are flickering in desktop, if you move mouse they dissapear, apear again, flickering and most likely the nvidia driver will crash with display has stopped working and recovered. They thend to flicker at same spot every time. Here are some examples of the issue that I found from other users but all of them with RTX 3000 series cards.

1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

I tested bunch of different driver versions, like from beggining of 2021 that I got first time the issue, untill now so there are alot of drivers and all are triggering the issue in certain moment. I did fresh windows install like 10 times , tested windows 10, tested windows 11, nothing works.

Did you try on another monitor/TV and/or with another display cable ?

So is there any solution ? If this was a major with all of the users, why didn't Nvidia lunched any fix till now ?

I will like to know, it may not be as major issue as you think, it may affect minority users...and anyway that is another major issue with black flickering bar on RTX 3000 series from 472.12 and still not fixed...

Try going into your BIOS and force PCIe Gen to Gen 3 (It's probably on Auto by default) and also test with an HDMI cable to see if it's just the display port

I've seen this problem before with my 3090, but it only occurs with unstable memory settings. Very easy to reproduce for me, I just set memory to +1000 on Afterburner and try to play a game, after 20 minutes or so this happens without fail. How are your memory junction temperatures?

The thing is I dont have how to reproduce it, for example from the first time that I got the issue, passed like 4 months untill I got the issue again, than after few weeks got it again, other after months again...so it not like its very common ..so It has to wait to long to see if will fix it or not.

is has nothign to do with this, I seen this issue on 3060, 3060 ti, me I got it on 3070 that memory juntion temperature cannot be read and is way lower than GDDR6X, and my self I dont have any kind of GPU overclock. And the most important think its just desktop or chrome/firefox or other internet explorer...but never games

Can you try lowering your memory speed a little bit? Even if it's at 0, try like -200, see if it happens again. It's very weird, I know, games run fine, benchmarks score OK. But if my 3090's memory is beyond +800 (1319 MHz in GPU-Z) this artifacting on the desktop/2D always occurs. Of course, if it is happening stock, you have a problem somewhere. Maybe memory running hot, maybe your card needs an RMA.

I told ya I tested 3 different graphic cards, all of them brand new....there is no way I got 3 faulty cards.....and If you read with atention I said that another guy that posted this issue on geforce forum he RMA his card just like me, but got the issue on both....so another guy with 2 different cards faulty ?

After spending a year with my 3070Ti I can say I haven't seen this.

I think your OC is unstable..

If your card isn't overclocked, I would try as suggested.. lower your memory clock.

Because the issues are not afecting everyone dude, it may be a minority users that we run into this problem so you lucky just that

Why you guys think evertime when see some artifacts that its a GPU memory fault ? Dont be so inocent most of them are dirrectly related to drivers
Just see how many artifacs issues are presented in the latest driver versions...there are bunch more I can keep searching and showing if not enough

So why this issue that im reporting it has to be memory related even I said I got it on differents brand new cards, why cannot be just like any of the below ?

I’ve been using nvidia GPUs for a long time.. never saw that before unless GPU was pushed too hard.

I did see that rainbow road a couple of times in Forza Horizon 5 though lol..

Well, I've owned my RTX 3090 since the day they came out, so I more or less have an experience with what it can or cannot do, and what its problems and shortcomings are :)

You're using a Corsair RM750x right? That is a good power supply, I suppose it's enough... so yea, idk what to say man. If after lowering PCIe generation to 3 and testing lower mem clocks doesn't help, I'm out of ideas. Of course, if you are willing to test that and let us know if the problem is mitigated somehow, that is already something to work with. Good luck

Hi, I bought ASUS TUF 3090 and have very similar issue. I also thought, it is VRAM related....BUT...it does this only on desktop with minimum load. I never saw it in games, benchmarks or furmark or when doing deepML training. I also run vram test without problem. I have stock gpu settings and never OCed it. This doesnt make sense - to have artifacts only when in idle. Temperatures are something like 44-55 degree C. Memory Clock is like 50 MHz in gpu-z.
I have latest studio drivers installed (DDU, clean install). It was also present on game ready drivers. OH and I have latest Windows 10 installed, MOBO is PCIex3 and have Corsair RM750x PSU.
In a week or two I will upgrade to new AMD platform with PCIex4 and RM1000x PSU, so I will wait, if this will be still a problem and potentitaly RMA GPU. On the other hand, I still dont have this issue, when gpu is heavy used, so...I really dont know, if it is really an issue. Its only annoying for a while.

I've had this exact problem with my TUF OC 3090 too, best of my knowledge this is caused by unstable memory setting. Usually this manifests after closing a 3D application when the memory clock is too high. I get this 100% after benchmarking with +1000, I find my card likes to run at +800 mem clock.

If your 3090 doesn't have a memory overclock applied, this could be bad. Since you already cleared drivers I'd be fresh out of ideas, did you try the other BIOS by flipping the switch and seeing if the behavior is the same?

I didnt do anything with card. I even dont know on which side the switch is :). But its strange, theres no problem in 3d games (like CP 2077), machine learning, furmark, occt vram test or other vram tests. And this can be seen only on desktop and even when the card is idle (all fequencies down). I will experiment a bit when my new HW arrives.
Only thing that isnt fresh is my Win10 install. When new HW comes, I will instal fresh Win10 or 11.

You will RMA the card and you will face the same issue with the new card they will give you

It's this switch that says performance and quiet mode. By the way I assure you that I'm not mining, rig is just a wreck under a complete rebuild and repair process

I have had ASUS 3090 strix since launched, switched to evga 3080 ftw3 ultra for 6 months, and now evga 3090 ftw3 ultra for 1 month, no issue so far. It is your setup if you have this flickering problem.

My 3080 TUF had the black rectangles twice. Once after I had recently got it (last summer) and week or 2 ago. That being said I've seen similar rectangles when overclocking my old 980 and having an unstable memory clock,

I had this issue before from overclocking memory, also from the video card not being seated in the PCIE slot fully.
