VisionTek Announces its Killer 2100 Gaming NIC

I wonder how much they will bring in from WoW and Alienware?

I'm sorry but I really dont see a need for these. Were talking about a few milla-seconds ping. Humans cant respond that fast and it's complete BS to market such snake oil.

I guess only people with "killer" rigs buy these when money is no issue. I mean people with i7 980x, tri-480 gtx in Sli, 1500w psu, and thousands of dollars worth of cooling components.

They have been tested against onboard and dedicated NICs, many many times. And every time, the result is the same: it's all BS. I'm just as surprised... apparently people are actually buying these, because they keep making them... which makes me sad.

I'd buy it just for luls if it was $20. Would be my first PCI-E 1x card. edit: or $50 if someone added a soundcard to the same board :)

At least they provide a chart where we'll see that in best case scenario you'ld get a 60ms ping instead on 70ms, whii :) Avarage being 6ms (looks more like 5ms based on that chart to my eyes) won't make any server feel more lag free. But it could limit some lag spikes?

Anyhow, would be nice to know is that a gigabit onboard NIC they are comparing to or something older.

I had one of the older models and it kinda pissed me off, it was a good nic with built in firewall and some other goodies. my problem was it was also labeled as a gigabit card too but transfer speeds wouldnt go above 20MB/s and averaged about 14-16MB/s. I ended up pulling it out because of that.

If it is really true with that 6ms diffrence then as MadClown said every bit helps. Id even say that its a LOT. Dutch players within their country frequently get about 5-15ms ping and a diffrent lan card can give you 6 less ? Its just the question about how much is it for that 6ms.

So you'll have 5ms ping instead of 11ms ping ? Yay. Totally worth the money to shave off 6ms off your ping when the average perception delay for humans is around 200ms. Note that this is the time needed to perceive that something happened, not the reaction time, which is longer.

That 6ms is completely useless.

i think i'd rather just get shot in the face in the game respawn and go kill before they get a chance to regain there health or let the guy behind me finish the person off so i get the assist lol then spend 100 bucks on a NIC card for 6ms

This is pure computer/network calculation times it wont change your brain lag but it will report your shooting signal 6ms faster than a regular card ( if ofcourse that chart is not a load of crap which it prolly is)

Your brain does this :
- you see your target : X ms
- your brain registers and reacts with mouse movement+click which are virually done simultaneously : X ms (i think its your 200ms you mentioned here)

All of the above is called physical reaction time and takes from 200ms to 1second depending on born reflex,state of mind bla bla bla..

Computer does this :
- computer registers your input
- computer sends it to NIC to send it over with TCP/IP (-6ms here)
- around the world over internet network
- servers NIC recivies the info + server proccessed all the stuff it got from players
This is where most games register ping values that are displayed for the gamer

Why would it be stupid to buy extra 6ms of youre a pro gamer and game vs other pro gamers where sometimes u try not to blink and already hold your finger muscle ready for click so youre a tiny bit faster than the other guy ?
I agree in public gameplay this most likely has no sense at all but when your gaming on a certain level trust me 'every bit' matters.

Again Im not convincing anybody that this works like the chart says at all.Im saying is that IF this works as they say it does then for some players this will be useful.

EDIT : No mailman the promos wont be less choppy.Buy a new CPU and dont forward/rewind spam it.

I am quite aware of what this card does. My job happens to be coding Firmware for server NICs and I am familiar with many of the offloading techniques which are at times used as latency reduction measures (but mostly to keep additional load off the servers/workstations at high bandwidth).

On a professional level, gaming is rarely done over the Internet because it is not a level playing field, and over a LAN, this card is simply useless. And if the level is not professional, then 6ms are moot anyway.

So what use does this "Killer NIC" have, again ?

Even if you're a pro gamer, a couple milliseconds won't matter(Keep in mind that most pro gamers go to events and game, where everyone is on the same connection) . If you play great in an FPS game and the other guy is a few ms faster networking wise, it won't matter in game, it's all dependent on the player themselves.

I've said it before in other threads, that when they originally came out back in the single core days where you would use close to 100% of your CPU that they actually worked (Tom's Hardware reviewed one back then, they were still expensive for the performance increase). In today's terms if you are using 100% of however many CPU you have then you would be far better off getting a better CPU. Their only benefit is offloading CPU use.
