MSI Intros Low-Profile Radeon HD 5670 Graphics Card

MSI unveiled a new low-profile graphics card based on the ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor. The MSI R5670-PD512 uses a half-height PCB and [apparently] single-slot design. It uses a dual 40 mm fan-based air cooler that bears some resemblance to the Twin Frozr II cooler, only a lot more compact. The card has 512 MB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide memory interface. The Radeon HD 5670 is DirectX 11 compliant, and packs 400 stream processors. Display outputs include DVI-D, HDMI with 7.1 channel audio, and detachable D-Sub. The card utilizes "Military-grade" components, such as solid-state chokes, and all solid-capacitors. The card should be available soon.

Low profile video cards are designed in such a way so that they fit in smaller sized cases, usually for home theater PCs or low power consuming setups. You would expect them to fit in a single expansion slot.

I would personally pair one of these with a mini-ITX motherboard and make a super small home theater PC (if I hadn't already made one).

Heatsink thickness, size of the whole cooler, number of slots occupied by the card...

also the PCB is sometimes different too. My 4650 has a 5 layer PCB which is part of the reason for the 64 bit bus interface (read it in a NewEgg review). The fact that this has a 128 bit bus and DDR 5 makes it a decent gaming card for when the random friends pop over.

I have a 4670 is the performance on these going to be that good over the previous version? i mean isnt a 128 bit bus gonna cripple gddr5?

No, that's the sweet thing with GDDR5, it gives you boat loads of bandwidth even on a narrow bus like this.

gddr5 on a 128 bus is roughly the same as gddr3 on 256 bus.

these redwood cores also overclock like champs, well into the 900s.

I love my 4670, but the 5670 destroys it.

most powerful low profile card I have seen in quite some time.

128 bit on GDDR5 causes no harm because GDDR5 is a QDR meaning 256bit GDDR3 and 128bit GDDR5 would be the same.

hmmmmm, now this looks interesting. I may get this over the 5770, only because i am going to stop using video cards with power connectors. Plan to get rid of my gts 250 in a few days and buy something else.

Thanks, hope the price is cheap over at newegg. :)

The LP GTS250 is still a lot faster than this, but this card is more suited for a low-cost, low-power HTPC, of course.
