OCZ Technology Announces Vertex 3 Max IOPS Solid State Drives

OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today unveiled a new addition to the highly-awarded Vertex 3 SATA III Series. The Vertex 3 Max IOPS edition drives extend the company's industry-leading Vertex 3 SSD product line to support users that require greater transactional throughput.

The Vertex 3 Max IOPS edition combines the cutting-edge SandForce SF-2200 SSD processor with premium NAND flash components to deliver exceptional 4KB random write performance with up to 75,000 IOPS. Furthermore, these drives can significantly improve multimedia entertainment and management, and the overall computing experience compared to both traditional mechanical hard drives and competing SSDs.

Vertex 3 Max IOPS will be available in capacities of 120GB and 240GB, and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive's lifespan. All Vertex 3 Series drives come backed with a 3 year warranty to ensure customer satisfaction.

Just ordered 2 of these puppies to use in RAID 0 :rockout:

Only problem is I had to order from different merchants so one arrives tomorrow and the other one soon afterwards :p

How many writes does it have though considering the shrink to 25nm...
Also can someone explain the writes to me and why it gets dramitcally less with each die shrink? And do these writes only affect when you uninstall and install something or does it just in general affect every time something gets written to the drive?

It makes you wonder why are they "holding back" the performance of regular Vertex 3. Because from what i can see, the controller is the same, they just applied a special firmware to it. Hm hm...

I just received the first of the two drives ordered yesterday, this one was sent from Newegg:





Never expected availability so soon after the drives were announced, but I could find only the 120GB version.

From what I gather, these drives use premium 3Xnm NAND as opposed as the 25nm NAND used for the regular Vertex 3, thus avoiding some of the pitfalls of the smaller process, like shorter life expectancy and lower performance.

The nice thing about these drives is that, if you're interested in getting one of them, Amazon actually is selling them cheaper than the regular Vertex 3, at $296.99 with free shipping and no tax, they have them in stock right now:

Let me show you some performance numbers, I use my 2x1.5TBs WD Caviar Black drives in RAID 0 for reference so you can see what to expect from these drives:

My second 120GBs drive is in the mail and will arrive on Monday, due to limitations on Newegg's part, I could only order one drive, and had to order the second one from Amazon, but fortunately they are shipping the drive before schedule.

I'll upload more results with two of these bad boys in RAID 0 as soon as I get my second drive, please let me know what you think of these results :rockout:

Now that you mention it, yeah, the writes seem kinda slow... Just moved both drives from the Marvell 9182 SATA III controller to the Intel SATA II controller, as my system was having some random stuttering when using the Marvell controller, do you think that has anything to do?

These drives are SATA III 6GBs, do you think using the SATA II controllers is affecting the writes? Could the 128K stripe size affect it? I'm pretty sure the write cache is enabled.

You should be getting just under 300MB/s in both read and write, in SATA 2 or 3.

I know this thread is kinda old, but I wanted to keep my promise of uploading updated results once I had two of these drives in RAID 0 :) The second drive I bought from Amazon arrived ahead of schedule:





Now, for the actual results:

These results were obtained on a fresh install of Windows 7 using Intel's latest rapid storage drivers. Please share your thoughts ;)

Thanks for pointing this out, moved my drives back to the Intel SATA II controller again, the Marvell controller was giving me all sorts of problems, these are the new results, I think these are closer to the expected performance for these drives, let me know what you think:

Man those are some fast drives. I don't want to be that guy but what could you possibly need 1GB/s for?

Your blacks look like they are performing as they should. I actually didn't realize they were that good of readers. I may have to get some. How loud are they? Compared to F3's if you've ever used those?

I haven't used an F3, so I couldn't compare, but compared to my 7200RPM Barracuda, these drives aren't that loud, you can hear barely hear them.

Now, for a silent PC, a Caviar Green would probably be better, but maybe not as fast ;)
