Sharkoon Intros Internal USB 3.0 Adapter

Apart from the three USB 3.0 front-panel models that were unveiled last week, Sharkoon announced the market launch of a cute little USB 3.0 Internal Adapter accessory that converts a standard 2-port USB 3.0 front-panel header to two type-A USB 3.0 ports. The accessory is as simple as a tiny PCB with a front-panel header socket on one end, a 2-port type-A USB 3.0 port cluster on the other, and some insulation. This accessory could be useful if you want to boot off or maintain a "secret" USB 3.0 flash drive or portable HDD/SSD, and ensure it doesn't stick out of your PC case. The Sharkoon Internal USB 3.0 Adapter is priced at €5.99.

Couldn't you in theory put a write-protected thumbdrive with your Win7 install files, drivers, etc. on it and just leave it in case you need to boot off of it to reinstall/repair?

I think this is more for the people that have cases with USB 3.0 on the front, but the cable didn't come with a header so you don't have to have 2 blue cables hanging out the back.

Such as the NZXT H2

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I know that is what the other adapters were for. From back when USB3.0 was just starting to show up on motherboards and the motherboards didn't have the header(I believe because the header spec wasn't finalized yet).

I use the front usb header salvaged from an old case in my FreeNAS box to boot from a thumb drive.

USB3 would certainly improve the boot time if my old mobo supported it.

I see two great applications for this: PageFile and ReadyBoost. Some people might avoid putting the PageFile on a flash drive since it can get yanked out. With this inside the case you could have an 'integrated' ReadyBoost and external PageFile.

i always like these things, for slapping USB wifi/mouse receivers inside the case.


and yes, you can always throw a write protected drive in there for important files/installers.

When I first saw the pic and skimmed through the article, I thought it was an internal USB 3.0 thing you plug into like a sata/pcie x1 slot to make your mobo run like it has 3.0. (which mine doesn't.) It seems I am completely wrong though. :cry:
