Arctic Readies the Accelero Xtreme 7970 VGA Cooler

The soon-to-be-released Radeon HD 7970 is certainly getting its share of waterblocks but there are also air-based custom coolers coming for AMD's flagship card. One of them is Arctic's Accelero Xtreme 7970 which measures 288 (L) x 104 (W) x 54 (H) mm, weights 653 grams, and features 84 aluminum fins, five 6 mm copper heatpipes, a copper base, and three 92 mm PWM fans that work at 900 to 2000 RPM.

Arctic's cooler comes with pre-applied MX-4 thermal compound, is CrossFireX compatible, and is backed by a six-year warranty. The Accelero Xtreme 7970 costs $97.95 / €73.83 and is set to become available on January 31st.

AC needs to release the latest mounting kit for the old AC Accelero Xtreme Plus/Plus 2 and we can re-use the old coolers.

Thing is, we won't need it if the hole spacing hasn't changed. I guess I'll have to wait to get my card or something. :ohwell:

erockerSo will my Accellero Xtreme with 6970 bracket fit on a 7970?
Does your original have the raised section of copper on the base of the cooler as this one does? From what I remember the old AC's were flat across the base, looks to me like the 7970 has a thinner IHS and there was compensation to make it there;)

See what I mean? (check OP for original)

You're right.. and it makes me sad. :( I will make it work with a shim if I have to... or hopefully AC comes out with a kit for the Xtreme Plus II.

Shim should suffice. I mean essentially that's what they are doing, plus if there is a power plug or "port" issue, I know you own a Dremmel;)

Dam. $100? They serious? That's way too dam expensive for ANY air cooler, CPU or GPU I don't care. That is just ridiculous.

I LOVE Arctic Cooling. I've had 2 products from them over the years. My third is on its way as we speak. It's an Accelero L2 pro for my 9800gt. Honestly, for the price you can't really get anything better. The coolers come with pre-applied with thermal paste, there are individual memory heatsinks that stick to the memory modules. They are WHISPER quiet and drop temps by at LEAST 10-15C. Best cooler company in my eyes.

This is what I don't really like, along with the VRM heatsinks :(

AsRockAhh yes the thinnish roundish plastic shroud.. Well take the shit of and get ya own fans on it..
I could do that.... and that is what I would do.... But come on you are really telling me you like the tree huger hippie bubble look? Well if so.... I got a green house dome in my backyard you might want to design a Heatsink after. Maybe that can be your claim to fame! Just made you a million dollars :)

Why don't you like them? higher mem clocks from experience on my end.

I recall reading about some people with an Arctic Cooling solution ranting about high VRM temps that's it, memory is a non-issue as it doesn't generate that much heat.
Besides don't you have to apply them with some sort of thermal glue to have them in place? It would be hard to remove them afterwards.

The thermal glue was replaced, and yes all the power is cooled with individual chips much like what is used for the ram chips. This is something that generated higher temps than other aftermarket coolers sure, but is still better than stock;) (as tested on my GTX 470)

The "thermal glue" is pre-applied on the mini heat sinks for the VRM and memory chips.
