Apple Launches New Attack on Samsung Phones

Apple seems to have a revolving door for legal actions as of late. Today the Chicago Tribune is reporting Apple has asked a federal court in California to block Samsung from selling its new Galaxy Nexus smartphones, which use Google's newest version of Android, called Ice Cream Sandwich, alleging four patent violations including new features such as a voice-command search function.

Galaxy Nexus, the official debut of which was delayed by Samsung in October to pay respect to Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs, is the first phone running on the newest Android version before the platform is widely adopted by hardware manufacturers such as HTC Corp and Motorola Mobility. HTC and Motorola are also in separate patent disputes with Apple. In a lawsuit filed last week in San Jose, Apple said the Galaxy Nexus infringes on patents underlying features customers expect from Apple products. Those include the ability to unlock phones by sliding an image and to search for information by voice.

"Google cannot deny its undivided responsibility for any infringement findings. A preliminary injunction would not prohibit the sale of a Galaxy nexus just because it's called Galaxy Nexus or looks like one: it's all about which patents it infringes on," said independent patent expert Florian Meuller. "I am absolutely certain that...for the preliminary injunction motion the Galaxy Nexus was singled out because it's so new, and important."

Samsung said in a statement on Monday that it is aware of the filing by Apple in the California court. "We continue to assert our intellectual property rights and defend against Apple's claims to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business," Samsung said in a statement.

With the new lawsuit, Apple is opening up another legal assault on the South Korea-based company after taking Samsung to the same court in April of last year. In the earlier case, Apple alleged that Samsung illegally copied iPhone and iPad design features and the look of its screen icons. That case is still going on, although in December Apple lost a bid for a preliminary bar against Samsung for selling Galaxy phones and tablets.

Apple acknowledged the setback in the new action and said now it is suing over new products and different patents. In addition to the California cases, Apple and Samsung are waging more than 20 legal fights in at least 10 countries in their war for global leadership of smartphone and tablet markets.

Big companies sue each other over the silliest things, and only well after the products they're used in become widespread.

Not just apple, but seriously... claiming that sliding an image to unlock a phone is a patent violation? Can you really patent such a trivial idea?

Bullshit. Voice-commanded search has been around for DECADES. Go be a patent troll somewhere else, Apple.

Apple is becoming new Rambus. Innovate instead of troll like a dick. It's 2012 and its' really hard to make anything new that hasn't been done and patented. I also don't get it how can you patent trivial things that have been around for ages. I'm just waiting for someone to patent eating, breathing, drinking and sex. It's really strange no one has patented this considering what kind of stuff they approve for patents these days...

You can't patent sex since it's prior art ;). But you probably could patent a new position ;)

This is BS. You can patent voice recognition, but patent each and every function that can be done through voice??? Samsung should patent voice syllables. You can speak to your phone in anyway you want, as long as your commands don't use syllables... Samsung patented that ;)

come on every one knows that its just the way to drag android and samsung down, apple says its all about patent. its just cover
and at this moment it goes disguisting how big company sue and sue and sue others to keep their market. if apple feels they are better roll out new product, new features and show to the market im better than our rivals so buy our product not just sue other company.
if just sue my grand mother could do that.

Hopefully it is just a patent trolling phase... Apple is just a profit-blinded drooling teenager

It would be funny if LG would troll Apple and stop making screens for them, or something of the sort

HaHaHa :roll::roll: Apple is quickly going down the shitter! Seem's like without Mr.Job's they are done. My Samsung is better than any iPhoney ever produced. They are claiming against voice command/recognition? WTF i've had voice recognition on all my phone's in one way or another for the last 4 or 5 year's! They were making claim's against the "app's" as well  Do they honestly think they own everything? I guess when you make over $400m per employee your outlook get's a little "inflated"

Samsung must be really taking a bite out of their profit's, i'd expect something like this from the like's of Intel/AMD or Nvidia/ATi. Can't wait for ICS to come to my carrier, still running gingerbread :)
