Donya Intros SATA Adapter to Fit 2.5" Drives in Slimline Optical Drive Bay

Donya introduced a unique accessory that lets you install a 2.5-inch HDD or SSD in the optical drive bay of your notebook (while stripping it of one). Called the DN-69810, these adapters are available in 12.7 mm and 9.5 mm-thick variants with SATA and IDE interface options. The enclosures aren't much more than a SECC cage with an interface relay. Measuring 128 x 126 x 12.7/9.5 mm, the adapters weigh about 60 g. The adapter could be sold through various peripheral brands, worldwide.

i already have one of these for an old IDE based laptop. hardly a new innovation.


also, most laptops dont let you boot from a HDD or SSD in the optical bay, weird BIOS limitation i've ran into a few times.

This would be a GREAT way to add extra storage to a laptop. I know a few laptop OEMs that used to run a similar interchangeable setup where you could swap out the optical drive for hard drive or an extra battery there, but that was a long long time ago.

I think Eurocom do this with some of their laptops though but you need to select it in the options

also, most laptops dont let you boot from a HDD or SSD in the optical bay, weird BIOS limitation i've ran into a few times.
Just switch both drives, the one you want to boot as main drive and the other one on the optical bay. (assuming both have the same interface)

-OR-

Use a boot manager, on the main drive, with a menu to other drives

-OR-

press F11 to go boot menu.

I did the boot manager before because I didn't want to leave my optical bay as main boot device and have easy access to boot whatever I wanted, pendrives, DVDs or whatever

They have these for unibody macbook pros, and Sager also makes ones that fit their models. They work well, too.

I find it funny that I have the exact same thing for my laptop that I picked for about $15 on ebay a year ago. The design down the the stickers looks the same.

after a quick google - Akasa has the exact same product thats been out for a while.

these are great for laptops IMO, I dont need one cuz i have a netbook but i can clearly see a use for these things.

I dont think Akasa makes these anymore anyway as they seem to be in limited supply with most retailers.

in the laptop i use it in, i cant becasuse the primary sata port is dead. have to boot from a USB stick boot manager to load the HDD in the ODD bay.
