Super Flower Unveils 530W Overclock Version PSU

PSU specialist Super Flower unveiled the "Ice Butterfly" 530W Overclock Version. The 80 Plus Platinum-compliant PSU features active PFC with LLC half-bridge, synchronous rectifiers, DC-DC switching, dual-forward switching, Japanese-made capacitors, and German-made MOSFETs. The PSU features fixed cabling, with sufficient cabling for single graphics card high-end builds (we imagine no more than two 6+2 pin PCIe connectors). The unit is cooled by a 140 mm temperature-controlled fan. It is backed by a 5-year warranty. Pricing and availability details are awaited.

this thing is an oxymoron lol. 530W? really? I didn't even know they make 530W PSUs anymore for anyone other than bargain hunters, I mean it might be okay, but why call it a PSU for overclocking?

Because I'm running a 2600K @ 4.6GHz, 8GB Samsung RAM @ 2133MHz, and an overclocked GTX 550 Ti on a 400W Antec HighCurrent PSU... and it's rock solid? I don't game so the GTX 550 Ti is enough to drive my 1440P monitor, but if I did game, I would have no issues popping an AMD 6870 in there. You don't need a 53085034830W power supply to overclock.

I've got an overclocked Phenom II X4 using about 140w and my 8800GT that's probably pushing close to 130 or so along with 4 dimms of DDR2, not exactly as energy efficient at DDR3. Then there's the 3 hard drives and one optical drive. All running on an Ultra LSP 450w power supply. Oh and all the fancy LED fans and LEDs on the front of the case.

That capacity isn't really an issue, quality is. Being a super flower platinum I doubt that's a concern.

I'd buy it. My 2600K and 7950 enjoy my Rosewill rebranded Super Flower 550w Gold rated PSU. Single GPU systems really don't need much more than that.

It is always better to have some headroom, that can accommodate peak consumption without vdrop and future hardware upgrades. Also every PSU gets less efficient when operating at near 100% load, so best case scenario is when high demanding game load sits on peak point of PSU efficiency curve. This way the bulk of PC power consumption in kWh will be supplied by the PSU at it's most efficient conversion rate. :)

Modern computers are very good at regulate power draw, so I don't think this is very true. And I've actually calculated this, for me it's not worth it to buy higher end PSU's. Some people claim they're worth it economically, but for me they're not.

If you are living in UK its actually quite important. 20w power difference will save you about £20 over a year, over the lifetime of your rig (2+ years?) it can easily recoup the cost of a more expensive PSU. You essentially get the extra features for free.

Hmm.. 20W, 1 year 24/7 is about €15 here (with taxes and everything, my current ... what do you call it? I could get it down to something like 12€/year). I don't think I've had a PSU for more than a year so for me it's not worth it. Also we have solid power here. ;)
