NVIDIA Outs GeForce 314.21 Beta Drivers, Improves Tomb Raider Performance

Late last week, NVIDIA rolled out GeForce 314.21 Beta software suite with the single intention of improving performance and stability (eliminating artefacts) on Tomb Raider (2013). When it was released, enthusiasts observed a performance gap between comparable NVIDIA and AMD GPUs on running the game, particularly with features such as TressFX enabled. The new driver works to close the gap. In addition, NVIDIA added some new SLI and 3D Vision profiles.

And the FPS still increased? DAMN!!!

When i shave my head, it takes me longer to wash it because i need to find the hair 1st. Guess nVidia managed to bypass that and so it's not as affected: great!!!

Jk, ofc :D

i've seen a video of that bug, it's just when tressfx is enabled?

there is some room where a whole fence/door is disappearing, i know someone on a gtx275 that has that bug, & the hair video was in the same room... i'm thinking certain spots of the game are just broken with these missing objects, maybe not so much the driver

I made video of this bug. Seems bug is gpu independent and appears only when tressFX is enabled. My gpu is hd6850 and sometimes having it too. Here is video:

Not a driver issues/bugs.

Sometimes (at certain camera angles) my 7850 also experiencing "bald Lara" when TressFX enabled.

That's probably the most subliminally erotic thing I've seen in a video game ever.

New patch released v1.0.722.3
Tomb Raider v1.0.722.3 Update info:

We have just made public a new version of the PC version of Tomb Raider, build 1.0.722.3. This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client.

In addition to various PC specific fixes this patch brings all the fixes available in the 1.02 console patch to the PC as well, but note that the majority of those was already included in the originally released PC game or version 718.4.

New fixes in 722.3:

- Addressed an issue in ”Shipwreck Beach” where the mast on the wooden ship was occasionally missing depending on the player’s path.
- Fixed a gating issue in “Research Bunker” where the elevator would get stuck in an unintended state.
- Fixes for multiplayer connectivity
o An issue related to security certificates that stopped many users from connection to Square Enix servers was resolved.
o Improved messages when you are unable to connect with Square Enix servers.
- Improvements to voice-chat for multiplayer
o New Push-To-Talk feature, by default mapped to F1.
o New voice-chat volume option.
o Improved overall quality of voice-chat.
- Fixes for crashes on startup in specific situations when no audio output is available.
- Fixes for various reported crashes during both single-player and multi-player.
- Movies are showing up again when using SSAA.
- Cost of TressFX reduced, especially in combination with SSAA.
- TressFX memory usage reduced for AMD Eyefinity and NVIDIA Surround setups.
- TressFX simulation and graphical quality improvements.
- New Ultra-quality shadow mode for contact hardening shadows. This is not enabled by default in any quality profile, but can be enabled from the advanced settings.
- Improvements to fullscreen/windowed switching and multiple display handling.
- Various UI improvements.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone, if you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, Build718.4, that can be used to switch back to the previous version. Please note however that you can only play multiplayer with people that share your version.

We’ve been working closely with NVIDIA to address the issues experienced by some Tomb Raider players. In conjunction with this patch, NVIDIA will be releasing updated drivers that help to improve stability and performance of Tomb Raider on NVIDIA GeForce GPUs. We are continuing to work together to resolve any remaining outstanding issues. We recommend that GeForce users update to the latest GeForce 314.21 drivers (posting today) for the best experience in Tomb Raider.

We are planning further patches beyond this one to address various issues that have come out of consumer feedback since the release of the game.

new drivers and patch have VASTLY improved my tomb raider experience, credit to both teams for working it them quite quickly too! (GTX670 oc)

v1.0.718.4, 1920x1080 settings Ultimate with FXAA (note that max shadow quality is normal)

Min: 26.4
Max: 40.9
Avg: 33.9

v1.0.722.3, same settings but shadows on Ultra now too

Min: 35.8 +35%
Max: 66.1 +61%
Avg: 50.9 +50%

That is damn respectable IMO! keep the drivers and game patches coming!

Don't know about Tomb Raider but I just did a quick run on one of my Crysis 3 saves, "Root of all Evil" chapter where I remember the GPU usage was all over the place generally dipping below 80% with lower framerates. Now it seems it's 99% GPU load and much smoother. Worth give it a try if one wants to play Crysis 3.

my GPU useage is still all over the place and Crysis 3 is quite playable but still lacking of game and/or driver optimisation..

I look at the sky and get high FPS and 99% GPU useage, but just playing the game normally the useage is usually between 55-60% and 85%, rarely 99 at all.

For me it was better in that particular situation. Didn't bother to check more but others reported improvement also. This doesn't mean that the game is flawless and only drivers are to blame. Is your 2500k stock? The game likes many fast cores. If there's no noticeable dips in framerates when GPU usage is lower then it's OK but for me in Crysis 3 clearly when usage goes down frames tank.
