GeForce 8800 Ultra on the horizon?

w0mbat, from the VR-Zone forums, has found the following information in the latest Forceware drivers for Vista :

NVIDIA_G80.DEV_0191.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX"
NVIDIA_G80.DEV_0193.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS"
NVIDIA_G80.DEV_0194.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra"
NVIDIA_G80.DEV_019E.1 = "NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600"
NVIDIA_G84.DEV_0400.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS"
NVIDIA_G84.DEV_0402.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT"
NVIDIA_G86.DEV_0421.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT"
NVIDIA_G86.DEV_0422.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS"
NVIDIA_G86.DEV_0423.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS"

It seems that NVIDIA is planning for a higher clocked GeForce 8800 Ultra and a cheaper GeForce 8400GS card. Will this be enough to compete against the R600? Or will we have to wait until the 8900 series?

what a silly little move by nvidia lol. you'd think that they wouldn't put such things as future cards with their exact names into drivers.

It looks like the 8500GT will essentially be an 8600GS. The ultra is probably just there to counter ati when they release their cards. They dont want ati to have the performance lead.

What a waste of money..

I dont get why people want to SLi mainstream cards. I guess they just dont use their heads.

Not seeing any benchmarks or anything, but I have gut feeling ATI will have the crown even if Nvidia releases their Ultra. Unless Nvidia has an inside man at ATI.

mainstream cards are the only ones i will ever buy
probabily a 8600gs when they come out and another in september in my b-day, no harm in that, and besides, 2x7600gs blow my x1800gto out of the water and are way cheaper :)

Isn't the X1800GTO the same grade as the 7600GT anyways?:p

I'd say an X1800GTO is better then a 7600GS, or a 7600GT for that matter.

I personally feel a little shaky on the R600s power, it just doesn't feel like ATi is that secure in what it can do.

If anything the 8800Ultra will probably be released just before the 8900 cards, to combat the release of the R600 cards.

It's good for people that can only afford to upgrade a little at a time. IE: Buy one now, then buy another for sli a few months later. Some of us just can't afford to drop all that money on a top of the line card.

i wish they would just pick one naming convention and stick with it. what happened to vanilla cards?
