AMD to introduce 45nm process AM3 CPU family in 2H08

AMD schedules to launch its 45nm process socket AM3 family processors in the second half of 2008. The processors will support HyperTransport 3.0 and will have a built-in DDR2/DDR3 memory controller. The processors will be backwards compatible with the previous AM2 and AM2+ socket motherboards, according to sources at motherboard makers.

AMD's AM3 family will include the quad-core Deneb and DenebFX, dual-core Propus and Regor, and single-core Sargas. Shipments of 45nm products are predicted to surpass those of 65nm products within half a year from launch, noted the sources.

Although Socket AM3 processors will be backwards compatible with previous socket AM2 and AM2+ motherboards, socket AM3 motherboards will not be able to support the previous socket AM2 and AM2+ processors. Therefore shipment volumes of socket AM3 motherboards will depend on the speed of transition to DDR3 memory, added the sources.Source: Digitimes

seems AMD has been listening and will move to DDR3. I was kinda hoping they would and they wouldnt. DDR2 is now just so freaking dirt cheap. I suspect this will also lower prices for DDR3 as well. I cant wait. Im gonna go AM2 (as I dont see any AM2+ mobos or chips out yet) towards the latter part of the year. Of course, Ill probably just move to a new AM3 mobo and processor when they debut next year. AMD FTW!!!!

i think ill go AM3 but i think ill keep my mobo depending on if they update the bios to support 45nm if they do ill but the socket converter or w/e to use it.

What difference does that make if performance is not different or there is no reductions of heat, etc? Some people forget that die shrinks only help reduce manufacturing costs. Unless there is something arch difference between 60nm and 45nm it's pointless to assume something "good" from the Consumer's point of view. Heck, you are still at their discretion to actually lower the price. There is nothing automatic here that will benefit the consumer, if so please link me.

a lower NM usualluy means it disapates heat much much better thus if you hacv e a crazy cooling system youll see lower temps resualting in better over clocking seeing as if you look at it generation spacifically you see better silicon purity and quality...

130nm Worst
90nm Oc'd better
60nm Better than B4
45nm follow the line


that is why 45nm is hyped.

Overclocking.

My 90nm cpu hits 3ghz without trying and produces little heat.

65nm will follow suit, 45nm will follow suit, as will everything else that has happened in the past. :laugh:

If you haven't been paying attention, you would think theres nothing good.. but a process shrink is a wonderful thing for many many reasons.

ESPECIALLY reducing manufacturing costs.

i am interested to see if AMD tries to challenge Intel for price as well as performance or if they are once again try to create a pricing prestige for the midrange and higher end chips.

Im still on a 939 :P {X2}3800+ still on 2.6Ghz stable

I will possibly seek to upgrade after xmas sometime otherwise the only thing i can really ask for as an SLi setup as im still running 1 single X1800XT

hehe. when i put my rig together a year ago i got the x1800xt 512 thinking i would buy another one to form crossfire by early 07. now its not worth it since dx10 stuff is out. :mad: it is very hard to keep up when you are living on a realistic budget. (i.e. mortgage, car payment, utilities, student loan)

that is why 45nm is hyped.
You're close but a smaller process doesn't dissipate heat better, it just doesn't create as much heat in the first place. :)

The dissipation of heat depends on the cooling.

haha we should form a club. i can also only afford a new graphics and am thinking the same ddr4 card when it comes out. the xtx model or something that will last me until dx 11. :roll:
ill also be selling some stuff cheap to help ease the burden but now im concerned that this 3800+ will bottleneck a fast card like the 2900. so i dont know what to do.

I'm on socket 478 :(
And when I do eventually get 775, which my uncle will probably give me, cause I don't really have any intention of upgrading anytime soon, they will have a new socket, probably with quad core being mainstream, and the mid-range proc being 3GHz :(

I was hoping they would be released sooner, so I could consider using one when I finally ditch Skt 478 this fall. I definitely don't want to wait a year to see if they're something I want.
