Summary of first iPhone review impressions

Since the first iPhone reviews are in, Engadget.com made an interesting list of features which the iPhone has ... or has not:
  • The mobile version of OS X or whatever it is the iPhone runs takes up 700MB of the device's capacity. Damn son!
  • There's no way to cut, copy, or paste text! WHOA! Big, big mistake.
  • No A2DP support. That, friends, is such a huge bummer right there.
  • Sorry, music can't be used as a ringtone -- even if it's just a raw MP3. No additional ringtones will be sold at launch.
  • On a PC the iPhone syncs with Outlook for calendars AND addresses! Noice.
  • It supports Exchange in some capacity, according to Walt, but he doesn't exactly say how.

  • Pogue again confirms document file reading -- but not editing -- for PDF, Word, and Excel (only).
  • Adobe Flash support is officially out. It's just not in the browser. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support. Sorry everybody, that's that.
  • It will take snaps, but won't record video. How can Apple love YouTube as much as it does and not realize cellphone-shot movies make up a sizeable chunk of the crazy crap you find on there?
  • Oh, and no MMS. And sorry, no voice dialing, either.
  • Contact groups can't be emailed as contact lists.
  • Apple sez between 300-400 charges the iPhone will lose battery capacity -- you'll send it in and get the cell replaced for a fee. Meh. We knew this would be the case, but still, meh.
  • Apple can (and supposedly will) be rolling out periodic updates -- no surprise there.
  • Battery life is, somehow, almost as mind-blowingly good as Apple claims for calls, music, and movies.
  • As we suspected, users are prompted with lists of WiFi networks if you're not nearby a trusted hotspot. We've seen this on other phones, and we're afraid this would get friggin annoying.
  • It's said to be very scratch resistant. The facade both front and rear apparently just doesn't pick up marring like regular iPods do.
  • Voice quality is said to be good -- not great.

DippyskoodlezSo.. your phone can...

Cut, copy and paste text?
Support Exchange?
EDIT word, excel and PDF files? Let alone, OPEN?
Email contact groups? Notice this is GROUPS, not CONTACTS. if you don't know the difference, GTFO.

Interesting. What cheap ass phone can do all of this while remaining as featureful as an iPhone? My Razr can't do any of that, and it wasn't cheap.

I really don't understand how they managed to get so many bullets out of what really are, 4 basic downfalls. And they really aren't even all that bad. Edit PDF's? How often do you do that? Not much. If you are, do you really need to be doing it on your phone?

I'm impressed though, an apple thread and theres nothing but shitting down apples neck for releasing a new product.
Someone posts a microsoft thread, everyone does the same.

What do people really want around here?
Theres always going to be the loosers in the crowd, drinking all the hatoraid!

The fact is : Yes, theres always going to be something cheaper out there thats just as capable as the iPhone is but I just don't see why some people get so defensive and angry about it. Apple isn't making you buy their product and are fully aware of the less expensive alternatives on the market, either now or soon to come. Thats great, go buy those and just shut the f*ck up. Honestly, nobody cares how much some of you folks hate Apple and/or the iPhone, people are going to but it regardless and theres just not a damn thing you can do about it. Same thing goes for Microsoft as well. Most of us know linux is a viable alternative but it will never outsell Windows or become an OS that the majority of end users will choose to use over Windows. :wtf:

So, go cry me a river and keep on drinking that hatoraid! Apple will just continue to sell iPods and iPhones and theres not a damn thing any of us can do about it.

P.S - I don't own either and probably never will because they don't really do anything for me, nor do I usualy have the money to spend on such items but I'm not about to go cry to the world about it or start ripping on the manufacturer because they found a way to make it a top seller. You could pretty much use the XBox360 and Sony PS3 in this arguement as well.

Nope, but neither can the iphone.

DippyskoodlezHow many more false claims you apple haters wanna try?
Apple haters? Maybe some here, but not me. I just refuse to accept the obvious hype, and prefer to look at things rationally. I think the iphone is a novel idea, but there are several issues that make it's purchase unjustifiable.

First, the price is exorbitant for a crippled device. For example, no MMS. Why would I want MMS when it has a full email client you may ask? Well, how about communicating with all my friends and family who have phones that don't support email? Can't send them a picture without it. And no, I won't insist they also all pay $600 for the thing just so we can continue to exchange pictures.

What else about it is crippled? Hmm, well it only won't record video! Come on now, even some of the cheapest phones nowadays do that. It's not that much to ask, considering Apple's consumer base is supposedly media savvy...

Second, the contracts. Each contract gives less minutes and costs more than any other plan out there. Then you're tied to it for at least two years. Cut and dry, that's lame.

The worst part about that contract is where it comes from. AT&T. If you have never had to deal with them, then consider yourself blessed. The very fact that the iphone is a AT&T exclusive was enough to make me not want it.

Finally, the alternatives. Yes they exist. For starters, the Nokia N95. It does about everything the iphone can't do (and everything it can) for the same price range. MP3 ringtones, exchangable battery, MMS, Flash, video capability, 3G network, 5mp camera instead of 2mp, memory card slot, A2DP, bluetooth file transfer, and the ability to run third party software not sanctioned by apple.

I'm sure I missed a few pointers there. Oh yeah, and the N95 was available, last year.

There are other contenders as well, many in lower price ranges that are still better featured than the iphone. And none of them require a lengthy, expensive contract to a single service provider.

So no, apple doesn't bother me, what bothers me are the masses of fanboys willing to throw their money all over apple for the sake of it's name, rather than it's substance. A little research makes it quite clear the iphone is lacking in the latter.

Hmm.

Looks like theres only 3 negatives left on the table.

Who uses a 2 megapixel camera for video? :wtf:

You think theres a reason they didn't include it?

As for contracts, the only negative is that you have to use at&t. I'm sure it wont be long until its unlocked and hacked to pieces to work elsewhere though.

Most phones have a contract anyways. The iPhone plans are actually pretty decent plans, aside from the fact its tied to AT&T.

The problem isn't the contract it has, the problem is its tied to AT&T.

If you think the contracts suck, then well you must not pay your own cell phone bill

What I want is a pre-paid plan for it...

Depends on the people/storage space - if it was a dedicated camera, 5mp+ for sure. For a phone? 2mp is perfectly fine.

I hope so. Even though I still wouldn't buy it, I think AT&T is one of the biggest drawbacks.

I use metroPCS, lol. $50 a month, unlimited minutes, no contract. It's not nationwide, but I really don't travel, so it works for me. :D

Storage is obviously a nonissue.

but why would you USE a 2mp camera? :wtf: Its like a watercolor slide show. Retarded. Use a friggin video camera if you need video.

Video on a 2mp camera is like direct x 10 features on a Geforce 4 MX. Sure, it'll run, but god. its USELESS.

And besides, anyone ebaying these is just an idiot.

I never said a camera was that useful either. The 2MP pictures are a lot more useful than a 2Mp video though.

You can atleast make out what something is supposed to be with a picture, a video will normally be shaky.

Not to mention a camera like that has MANY lighting adjustments being made realtime, if you're in anywhere with more than 1 different level of light, you get nothing but camera adjustments the entire video.

A picture can atleast wait to get into a decent shot.

Yup, you got me! Even though I don't own any Apple products and don't plan to but damnit, I'M A FANBOI!!! I never once stated I liked Apple, ever but it gives me pleasure to rip into people who hate them for trivial or just plain stupid reasons. So, if that makes me a "FANBOI", then so be it!

BTW, drink up! The hatoraid bowl is still pretty full! I'm pretty sure Apple is quakin' in their boots because a few dipsh*ts showing their overall ignorance on an internet message board! :nutkick:

Heck, I think I'll go run out and buy myself an iPod video and a new Mac Book Pro now... :rockout:

Its clear, that people that bash products with no basis on a forum will make gigantic impacts on how a revolutionary product will sell.

Look at the iPod! Everyone hated it!

Oh wait, bad example.

You missed the point.

Most of apple's higher end things are brushed aluminum and look really damn nice in a professional setting.

And imacs are White.

Theres no matching anymore.

The old colorful ibooks died a really... really long time ago....

I agree as well, to a certain extent. However, people will like what they like and purchase regardless of knowing whether another product is superior or not. Take the iPod for example, there are a number of less expensive, fully featured alternatives out there but this has yet to stop Apple from making a killing in iPod sales. What I don't get is why so many people want to bash Apple for having a good selling product, for once, regardless if they think it's good or bad. The majority have spoken and the iPod is here to stay.

OK, nevermind most of that, I think it's a fairly incoherant rant as I'm dead tired atm... :ohwell: :D
