Universities in Germany put 500GB in one DVD, claim 1TB is possible

The University of Berlin, partnered with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, as well as Universita Politecnica delle Marche in Italy, have found a way to squish 500GB of data into one HD DVD.

Under normal methods of storage, a Blu-Ray disk holds 25GB of data. An HD-DVD holds 15GB, and a dual layer HD-DVD holds 30GB. However, the universities have managed to modify where the recording laser puts the data. By "using nanostructures inside the disk rather than on the surface as in conventional optical storage systems", the Microholas project has found a way to put 500GB onto one HD DVD. The universities look forward to pushing this project to it's full potential, which could mean a Terabyte of data on a single HD-DVD disk.Source: Reg Hardware

When they make this a standard they better go back to enclosed discs like those seen in spy films etc. Theres no way you could scratch a disc this dense without losing data to corruption.

Not even a scratch. Anything that touches it. Probably even air.

i cant fill up a 80gb hard drive let alone a 500gb dvd.... though i dont have any porn like yall :) lol

but this would be great to back up your harddrive or even remove the need for one at all in a laptop

two words = enterprise backups

this would be much better than tape backups or dvd backups for large companies or the government due to price and density. optical may be old fashioned but its sure as hell inexpensive.

Disadvantages
* Price per gig
* Capacity
* Lower recoverability - After mechanical failure the data is completely lost as the cell is destroyed, while if normal HDD suffers mechanical failure the data is often recoverable.
* Vulnerability to power loss, magnetic fields and electric/static charges
* Slower than conventional disks on sequential I/O
* Limited write cycles

Right now they're not practical, but once their capacities go up and prices go down, they'll be just like normal hard drives only amazing. They'll be improved greatly. Discs are getting old.

Discs can only spin so fast before they shatter. ;)

If they can jam more data into less space, they wont need to spin real fast will they ;)
