Sony Confirms PS3 Pricecut

Sony cut the price of their Playstation 3 selling in the United States by $100 today lowering the cost to about $500 or $20 more than the most expensive XBOX 360 model but still twice that of the Nintendo Wii. Chief Executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton believes sales will double. The price drop was widely expected by industry analysts despite the denial of such plans by Sony's President last week.

Maybe there are some marketing/economy experts here. Exactly WHY do companies first deny something and then a week or days afterwards still do it?

Nice to see the states get a price drop, i hope the UK will see a drop in price soon as well. I was considering buying one in the next few week but i think ill wait now and see if they drop the price, even if they don't, i still wont buy one, had enough of rip of Britain, whilst everywhere else get price drops and well lower prices

$500 in the US then? Dirt cheap. They're still $1200 here in NZ. with the exchange rate at 0.78? Go figure.

Of course they would deny any price cut plans, that would slow the already slow sales even more up until the price cut date.

Because if they confirmed it then everyone would stop buying them and wait for the price cut.

I honestly think that $500 is still to expensive for a gaming system. And I really doubt that it will double sales. Nintendo did it right by keeping their system somewhat affordable. I almost feel like the XBOX and Playstation systems should simply be dropped in favor of PC gaming rigs... especially since their systems are basically PCs designed for gaming. The Nintendo Wii (and DS) do not contain expensive, high tech video cards or CPUs... but they are affordable and have loads of fun games to play... heck even the games for the Wii and DS are about $10 cheaper then the same game for the XBOX 360 or PS3. From the perspective of a parent, the Wii is still a much better choice.

The kids and myself love our good old Playstation 2. Now, that was a powerful, yet affordable system. :)

If they dropped the price to £250 ($500 US) that would be awesome! But like the other brits in this thread have said, thats unlikely to happen sadly. :(

1 more $100 price drop and a decent game library (looking at ign ps3 release date, seems very disappointing)...only then will i consider a ps3. This price drop is probably gonna come to x360 also.

LoL @ sony. What a mess they've created for themselves. As far as games are concerned, if you own a 360 and a PS3, there's no point in buying multi-platform games for your PS3, as it is yet to be proven that it can outperform the 360. It's a nice blu-ray player tho. I'm just waiting for FF13, because the best action games are being released multi-platform, and PC-only. I feel stupid for buying 2 PS3s on release. I have used only one of them for about 8 hours of gameplay (motorstorm).

Just got an R600. Just waiting for fall of this year, and the console-OMG-super-leet-graphx will be Obso1337.

Only in the US. In Germany/Europe it was 500€ when it came out according to wikipedia. So only 100€ less than the PS3 now.

Company PR people are either slow, told to deny it until officially announced, or... websites are full of it.

Dang!! Based on this and other comments in the thread, I would assume that Sony does not price their systems in Europe the same as they are in the US? If that is true, then I am very disappointed with Sony. That is a low thing to do... almost unthinkable in my book. :( Wow... wow... wow.

i saw in the newspaper today that theyre slashing the price by £50 (to £375 from £425) however a few of the online retailers were selling them for £399.99 anyway, so they'll probably be selling them for £350

That's good to know, I quite fancy one but at the moment the Wii seems like a much better choice. Only really ever used to play GT3 GT4 and the GTA games on my PS2 but there's loads of stuff on the Wii I like the look of. :)

So I was reading about the new 80gb model coming out this August in the US.

First it seems it gonna have the good old rumble controller! Whoopppy!

Second it gonna lack the Emotion Chip!...booooooooooooooo! So the 80gb is gonna be like the pal console, software emulated ps1/2.

So all in all, 60gb is the best buy. And i bet you can get those rumble controllers for your 60gb separately.
