London gets free WiFi

A free WiFi service has been launched in London, provided by Free-hotspot.com and WiFi infrastructure firm MeshHopper. The service, which covers a 13.6 mile stretch of the River Thames from Millbank to Greenwich, provides users with a free 256kb/s internet connection if they agree to watch one 15-30 second advert every 15 minutes. If users refuse to watch the ads, they will be charged either £2.95 an hour or £9.95 a month to use the service, with download speeds of 512kb/s. "This really marks the arrival of free Wi-Fi in Greater London," said Dan Toomey, chief executive of Free-hotspot. "Millions of Londoners, as well as commuters, visitors and tourists, can now expect to find free Wi-Fi as they work or play along the Thames." The service is being marketed at website Online-4-free.com, and the coverage should be extended to 22.3 miles by August this year.Source: CNET News

Not if you plan to use the service to play games. $18/month is not worth 64 Kilobytes/s download speed, who knows how bad the latency is.

Oh c'mon, who would want to use this kind of service for games. It's for e-mail checks and internet surfing, nothing more- probably on a laptop.

I dont think this is targeted towards gamers.

Its more for the casual web surfer

Nice that would be great! Cover the US (or just cities) and charge me like $15 amonth, I'd be happy. Course I'd still have my highspeed at home for my games and ftp/htp stuff.

This isn't free, it's just paying in mindshare rather than flat monetary fee.

I'll keep my mindshare to myself, thanks.

Pretty cool idea, even if it is a small stretch on London (england whatever this place is called). Free with only needing to watch an advert every 15 mins. Not bad. 256kbs isnt bad either, its the low end of DSL over here if Im not mistaken (mayhaps even cable)

And people tend to have much more of that to spare than they do money!

I agree with you, it isn't free as such, but then again most people put up with ads on webpages anyway.

Awesome, honestly, 15 sec advert for 15 min of browsing...not to bad. Especially for people that do travel there alot but don't live there.
