First Penryn Core 2 Chips Top At 3.33GHz

The Quad Core 2 Extreme processor will run at a frequency of 3.33 GHz have a 1333MHz FSB, 12MB L2 Cache and will retail for about 999$ when it gets released in Q4 2007. In addition to the Quad-Core 2 Extreme processor intel also plans to release two performance level 45nm quad-core processors which will also have a 1333 MHz FSB and 12MB L2 Cache. Another four 45nm dual-core processors (Wolfdale) will be launched in the first half of 2008. The first three processors will have a 1333MHz FSB and 6MB L2 Cache, while fourth will have a 1066MHz FSB and 3MB L2 Cache.Source: Digitimes

Man, poor AMD.....the performance is probably gonna be insane on these chips.

3.33 ghz quad core? Are they still going to use the same stock cooling for that. Something tells me even at 45 nm their current stock cooling won't be able to keep it under 60C

Geez, Intel sure is making everything in their hands to make them look like they're generations ahead of AMD!

AMD is just about to release their answer to Conroe/Kentsfield, and Intel already is preparing Wolfdale and Penryn :eek:

The stock cooler should suffice since the new 45nm process brings lower heat levels....And with a non stock cooler this baby should easily do 4 GHz in each core...Awesome...Not to mention the L2 cache and the FSB...

My quad runs fine at stock voltages when pushed to 3.1GHz, but it get HOT when under full load (like Folding on all four cores). The 45nm version should run cooler even clocked at 3.33 GHZ. I'm gooing to have to get me one of those. :rockout:

this is what we were waiting for right? the penryn is supposed to be the bomb for like ever right? man i cant see anything being faster than this...

Phenom is expected to be released at 2 ghz....Penryn is coming out with 3.33 ghz. If you can beat a 3.33 ghz quad core with a 2ghz quad core you'd have the best architecture ever. (Penryn being the 3.33, not something like netburst).

don't forget that 2 ghz phenom is prety much a low end of phenom, they will release higher clocks later on...

Yeah, but it depends on how much later. Also there are no solid benchies out yet :mad:. You can't trust the ones from amd...and you can't trust the ones from other sources...

12mb L2 cache?:rockout: I thought 6mb was already a lot. Right now Intel has products that can deliver performance and are scalable. AMD will really have their hands full in the coming months, as if the situation now isn't bad enough.

45nm wont lower temps by itself. the chip will have to operate at a lower vcore for there to be any change in the cpu temps.

oh and im just putting this out there intel cant have upgraded the way these chips work to well if a 6000+ can keep up with a ocnroe using 1/4 the l2 cache it makes me think that intel needs to improve its design and not half ass the chip if they want to stay ahead of AMD they will need a complete redesign not pentium 4m + a massive cache and a dual/quad core edition.

think only amd uses native quad and integrated memory controller :)

Well that is might nice stuff from Intel. But even at 45nm, the heat can still surge. I expect stock cooling to take a unique redesigned approach.

Is Core 2 about to top out (GHz)? Very few processors (whatever the architecture) can get a lot higher than 3-4GHz without fancy sub-zero liquid cooling.

What is the next performance trick?

wont the die shrink cut down on temp? I would like to see avg 4ghz oc in Penryn :D

I dont think were really going to need more performance for a couple years after this, that will give them enough time to draw up a better processor.

By the way what is the limit to the size of the cpu?
