World Of Warcraft Reaches New Milestone

Blizzard's award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft (WoW) has reached a new milestone, with a player base now totaling more than 9 million subscribers worldwide. Since debuting in North America on November 23, 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular MMORPG around the world. It was the bestselling PC game of 2005 and 2006 and has remained at or near the top of the weekly PC-game sales charts for much of 2007 as well. Blizzard's Burning Crusade expansion released to critical acclaim in several regions earlier this year and shattered PC-game sales records in North America and Europe, with nearly 2.4 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of release and approximately 3.5 million in its first month. World of Warcraft is available in seven different languages and, in addition to North America and Europe, is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Um, haven't they been saying "9 million" for over six months now.

Maybe it was 8.8 and people were rounding up for good measure.

While those numbers are horrendously fabricated, there's one great thing about all the WoW players being on WoW : They're lame asses aren't on Everquest :)

Shame Blizzard didn't make a Starcraft MMO instead.

I play WoW, you don't see me sitting on that game for several hours a day

Hate on it all you want, half of you never played it for any amount of time. MMORPGs are fun, and it's fun communicating with people and doing things with them.

One of the best things about computer games over consoles, it is possible to get banned.

Starcraft 2 is coming out and THANK GOD they are keeping the same concept, no heroes (WC3), no MMO, etc! I can't wait!

I've been playing WoW since beta, I have both special edition sets (never been to blizzcon tho), and I've tried about every class and race. I like it but then again I play with friends and probably don't play more than 20hrs a week if that. Its all about priorities and moderation people ;)

I know a guy who has made quite a bit of money farming gold, leveling characters and then selling these items to fools who have more money than brains. He has a farm of three computers that he bots while he is in class or at a real job. He uses the money he gets from that on fun things like trips to Colorado or South America. It's a great idea, basically free money.
