40GB PS3 Helps to Triple Sales

Sony’s introduction of the new, cheaper 40GB version of the PS3, along with a fall in the price of the 80GB version, has helped to give a huge boost to the console's sales, doubling the number sold in the week immediately after its release, and tripling sales the next. Prior to the release of the 40GB model, the PS3 was selling between 30,000 and 40,000 consoles per months. This figure rose to 75,000 in the first week, and 100,000 in the second week, with Sony’s CEO Howard Stringer saying the following:
Obviously, we've taken so much heat over the year on PS3. Finally, the turning point has been passed.
He also commented that he feels the surge in PS3 sales is unrelated to Nintendo struggling to cope with demand for the Wii, commenting that it is ‘fortuitous’ that the Wii is running out of hardware.Source: DailyTech

it isn't so much the 40gb version that has helped sales it is the reduced price of the console itself that has helped triple sales, it is pretty obvious why the sony marketing guy was sacked a short while back.

the biggest game you missed out there was MGS4 and to be honest that is the only reason i may buy a ps3 for.

Do you remember at lauch, where cocky SONY said that they thought the launch price was "too cheap"?

We'll I'm pleased to hear some of the SONY guys were forced to fall on their swords.

Good for them that they have FINALLY found the right price point. You would have thought they would have got that RIGHT at launch! If they HAD, then perhaps the blu-ray vs. HD-DVD wars would have been won by BR in round one. As it is, not only did SONY cock up the launch of PS3, they strategically failed to get BR into peoples homes before HD-DVD was ready and sufficiently competitive.

Lauch titles are ALSO important. Because the new PS3 has removed PS2 compatibility chip, I will not get a PS3 until there are sufficient titles for my interest. In the meantime, I think I'll be getting that HD-DVD player... BECAUSE I won't buy TWO BR players... one now and then the PS3 later.

So another feather in camp HD.DVD

The power of the dollar is around the same as the power of the pound. So for something that is worth a $100 in the US, will worth £100 in the UK, regardless that it is double.

That may be if they buy from here, but the fact is:

100$ = £48.67

yeah its all exchange rates. I dont see how the UK Pound and the Euro goes for more. However, it is evident the dollar has fallen sharply compared to both since Bush came into Office and well, while Clinton was leaving <:)
