New Controller Interfaces With Your Brain

While new joysticks and racing wheels attempt to make you feel like you're actually in a helicopter or race car, we have yet to see a control interface that properly emulates something fanatical, like a wand for Harry Potter games, or a goat for World of Warcraft. Emotiv Systems is working on a controller that can fill in the blanks, by connecting right to your brain. In the Electronic Arts game Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, prototypes of this controller have already been used to trigger spells and move the character, based on nothing more than the thoughts of the user. With a lot of help from James Breen, who used to work for EA and Lucas Arts, the Emotiv Systems controller will find a way to retail shelves by late 2008.

So you slap on this headset and pop in your favorite game.
Two minutes later an in-game ad appears and the system records your cerebral reaction to the advertisement. Based on your response, the game adjust (and send feedback) accordingly.

Two words. "Mind rape".

Not to mention how this kind of thing could be used for DRM or copy protection.

No thanks. I'll stick with my keyboard and mouse.

holy flaming balls! talk about pluging into the matrix. pretty soon they will have a device that actually sends the games images to your brain so you can just close your eyes and take part in the experience. it begs the question though, perhaps this world is an illusion and we are all just a part of a massive role playing game. wake up neo!!!!!

I love the idea but it's another stepping stone to the Human Slug when even flipping the remote is too much of a physical task.

However very cool device.

now why cant we use such a technology for other things like mental retardation and other mental illnesses? while games are fine, things like this need to be deveolped for the less fortunate people.

Interesting product. I hope its not just early marketing bs to attract potential financiers.

I wonder though, what kind of edge would this give in FPS games? I can already hear the complaints: "No fair! You interfaced ur brain with ur "insert FSP title" and that's why you got gazillion frags/kills. All I gots is a crappy optical mouse!"
