Shanghai, the 45nm core from AMD, is likely to debut late this year. It will be similar in many aspects to the currently-availabe B3 stepping of the Socket 1207 Opteron (Barcelona) shipping today. Unlike Barcelona however, which has its HyperTransport 3.0 clock generator fused off, Shangai should utilize HyperTransport 3.0 for inter-CPU communication. Also, AMD has a new "native six-core" Shanghai derivative in store, currently codenamed Istanbul. This processor is clearly targeted at Intel's recently announced six-core, 45nm Dunnington processor. AMD plans to utilize 2 Istanbul cores to create a 12-core CPU, where both cores will communicate with each other via HyperTransport 3.0. A quad-channel memory controller may also be possible. All new Shanghai CPUs should be backwards compatible with existing Socket 1207 motherboards.

Shanghai is currently taped out and running Windows at AMD.

I sure hope this is an Ace for AMD, they need to come ahead again, (and possibly not lose money in a Q4 of 08?)

Sounds like they are trying to win over the business world like Intel did in the 90's. AMD, I think, is more interested in getting their money from corporations and big business then from individuals. AMD is becoming Intel in the 80's and 90's.

go AMD!!! this is like Intel's approach and i think they will do great if 45nm will cut the power requirements by about half or so
by cdawall (April 18th - 4:42 PM) - Reply
45nm wont cut any power at all unless they change the voltage manuf. size makes no difference in heat generated

So... will we have Intel aficionados complaining that this isn't a "native" 12-core chip?

alright, no need to agitate. AMD users also used "duct tape" phrases

Wow, this is surprising news. I didnt think they would do a 12 die true core so this is pretty awesome. Wonder what they got for the Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3 deal.

I suspect poor OCing performance on the horizon from 12 core AMDs!

poor oc performance if this current generation even after the b3 stepping fix is any indication amd chips will be a big pain in the but to oc

It not a versus, its just facts ..Current Phenoms suck.

alright, the oc perf. of amd cpu's was never as great as Intel cpu's and yet people were buying it, so...

i just hope its not like the pentium d's which maximum pc called two duck taped together p4's it was great at encoding/decoding but any other bechmark it got smacked by amd i hope that amd puts the cores together like intel does with their quad cores. it will be interesting to see how it fairs considering intel only plans to have octa cores out by the end of 08 start of 09

I was like "HOLY ****" when I read the title. I thought you meant AMD will release CPUs with "12" cores so we should call it triple quad cores.
