Microsoft Challenges Console Competition to Sell 100 Million Units

Most of the time, the console war winner is decided as soon as a company sells 10 million units of their console. With NPD data consistently showing a high demand for the Nintendo Wii, most would agree that Nintendo has already won. By the 10-million-to-win rule, Nintendo won several months ago. At present, Nintendo has sold around 25 million units around the world. Microsoft has sold 19 million Xbox360's, and Sony has sold 12 million PS3's. However, Microsoft refuses to go down without a fight. Microsoft instead set a new competition, and wants to see who can sell 100 million units first. Microsoft feels that they have a superior product, which will inherently shine as time goes on. However, with grocery, gas, and mortgage prices quickly approaching the cost of gaming, the lower initial cost of the Nintendo Wii just might cinch the console war in Nintendo's favor. We shall see.Source: DailyTech

Unless Microsoft makes their console the lowest price of the three I expect the PS3 to win this contest, I think the Wii is at its peak and a game like Metal Gear Solid 4 its going to make it look somewhat out dated.

curious - who wants to bet that SONY and Nintendo both have a new generation console out LOOOOONNNNGGG before anyone comes close to 100mil units? Hell, all of them are already a couple to a few years old, and I'm sure S & N both have new products currently in development.

Seems like a brash claim/move on MS' part. :shadedshu

I would take that bet, The Ps3 is the only true future proof format due to the unharnessed power and the massive storage over a regular DVD, I am not a sony fan but the extra added value of the console also makes it far more future proof even at its higher retail price point.

I think this little competition is almost a bit silly. It like racing someone on the quarter mile then losing, and then suddenly wanting a race around the world :P

Sold my stars!
ps3 will win this. ms you lost, get the fuck over it.

reminds me of how little kids play rock paper scissors and when someone loses they're like no lets do 2 outta 3, and they loose again, lets do 4 outta 5, etc.

if their product is so superior, why do i continue to hear about the Red Ring of death and Drive Reading problems? Sorry Performance doesnt win if it cant do it in stability, the Wii has been consistent enough in stability and even with Upcomming games the Graphics will be close to that of XB360s performance. The only thing ive seen for the wii is the seldom Firmware Updates, Overall i havent had a problem with the wii myself.

Desperate werds from m$ the ps3 is going from strength to strength and the wii will always be popular cus it markets itself to all ages the xbox 360 had the initial glory but not now.

The x360 Arcarde (no HDD, 256MB Flash storage [read: not worth shit]) is €200, Wii is €250.

So it's really down to the games and of course Bluray. I think Bluray sold more PS3s than you'd imagine. Due to firmware updates its the best Bluray standalone player out there afaik.
