Yeah that statement doesn't make any sense. They were trying to do some project not too long ago where they would map every neuron in the brain to attempt to better understand it. They said doing such a task however would require more storage space than every computer in Google's company has though, whatever that may be.

As far as memory of the human brain though, there is no limit that has been found. There is a condition called hyperthymesia, which is basically the opposite of amnesia, and person is unable to forget anything (a surprisingly crippling and very rare condition), so 10TB, odd........

Gotta love the advancement though, I wouldn't know what to do w/ 5tb, maybe I'll figure out something by then though.

the bigger they get the harder it is on the downloader when they lose it all because they didnt backup.

ok, the backup means for me are an External HD (not powered all the time) and Optical Media, other option is tape backup.

The Japan-based company has stated that it plans to have a commercial 3.5-inch hard drive on the market that can hold 5TB by 2010. It aims to achieve this with write heads that use something called current perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magnetoresistance (CPP-GMR).

That's very impressive if they really can achieve this. I thought that we were already near the maximum physical capabilities of HDD density. And also to increase sotrage 5x in 18-24 months is a rate of increase never before achieved in storage. Usually storage densities on HDD have been 40% per year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk#Capacity_and_access_speed

That means we should expect 2-2.5TB drives by 2010. Getting to 5TB is DOUBLE the rate and very impressive.

Perhaps Hitachi will resort to DOUBLE HEIGHT drives, like the SCSI drives of the 90s? That's the only way I can logically see them achieving that storage capacity, unless this new current perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magnetoresistance is a massively fancy improvement over seagates perpendicular methods currently used by everyone.

PLUS, at that data density, small platter imperfections will have a big impact on data integrity. I'm sure "bad sector" management will need to be a bit more sophisticated than today.

Rather annoying though, CD's used to be larger than your harddrive. DVD's used to be slightly smaller, so still a viable medium. But with process of huge harddrives and the size of modern removable media it is more attractive to go for external harddrives.

I expect these to come in at prices around 300 to 400 USD with the price of HDDs so cheap per gigabyte.

I think my brain holds more than 10tb of data. Hell thats about my the size of my memories from my childhood until earlier this morning :roll:

:p funny. No, I just love to collect and watch movies. I can remember when DVDs were just gaining popularity and I started collecting then. Now that i'm on to high definition media, the space needs for my backups have grown tremendously.

I used to just burn my DVDs to a blank disk and store it that way, but a friend of mine had a small movie server going (about a few hundred movies) and i caught the movie server bug. Using MyMovies as my management software, i don't have to go hunting through tons of DVD booklets to find a movie that i want to watch, they are all there, well most of them are (only the ones i would consider most watched).

Right now, i'm running a RAID5 5TB server accross 5 disks. Just think, my storage space could jump from 5TB to 25TB without using up any more space in my case. Trust me. Once you get a server up and running, you will truly enjoy the convenience.
