With the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2, codenamed R700, inching towards an August launch, ChipHell released fresh pictures of the R700, these are product images of the card in the form in which it will be sold, all built to order.

Visually, the R700 can be regarded as a black colored R680 (HD 3870 X2). While early shots of the cooler showed it to have a red colored leaf-blower, these shots show a black one. The appearance can be described as: Black PCB, black see-thru cooler cover, black leaf-blower, black heatspreader over the rear-side of the PCB.

As long as GeForce GTX 280 is 1 cent more than this, it is more than worth it. AMD says: "The R700 will overwhelm GeForce GTX 280".

my god it gonna be a hot mother in your case my 4870 is unreal. I cannot imagine how hot this thing is gonna be. My 4870 at the default fan setting scares me I hope that it doesn't melt the PCIe slot it so freaking hot.

Oh now that is nice looking... I'm not normally an ATI guy but I would honestly consider that as a viable replacement for my 8800 Ultra.

Actually 4870 is quite cool running. The only reason for high temps is what you said; the low fan speeds. Remember that the fan at like 10~20% runs like at 1000RPM. If you install something like a duo orb onto it, temps will just plummet. However theres no need, just use the fan mod. Lets hope the partners wont supply us with a bios that makes the fan spin slower than the earth.

Even at 30% fan (stock), my 8800 GT idles at 65~70 C at an ambient temp of 24 C. You can imagine what a RV770 at 20% fan would do.

Looks nice, but didn't some preliminary photos of this card's cooler have a heat pipe? If this is the final design it is going to be one hot card (ex. 3870X2 stock cooler)

I agree. Its going to be a lackluster cooler on a great card. Aftermarket will be essential for anybody that wants to OC. A nice looking cooler, doesn't mean its a very useful cooler.

seriously tho, think on this, get the x2, get a waterblock, get an unlocked bios and ramp up some volts, then overclock that bitch like crazy and watch ur widescreen monitor melt lol.. well.. not really but its gonna be one awesome card. Im half tempted to wait a bit longer to see if ATI releases some of those rumoured higher binned versions :)

There are bigger rumours than that running aroung now.
