NVIDIA today slashed the prices of its latest generation of GeForce GTX video cards. The GeForce GTX 280 is now available for as low as $499 and the GeForce GTX 260 costs $299. The high-end GTX 280 was originally priced at $649, while the 260 was priced previously at $399. With a price tag of $299, the GeForce GTX 260 now matches ATI's comparable Radeon HD 4870. The higher end GeForce GTX 280 is still waiting to meet its main competitor in the face of ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2, due to become available later this quarter.

It seems both Ati and Nvidia are having problems. Yes Nvidia lowered there price. But your missing he fact that AMD stock has drop to $6.00 a share. Last year it was at $12.00. If something doesn't happen soon Ati will fall fast. Maybe AMD will have to sell Ati. Just think Nvidia buying up Ati....
Or Intel?

wow they are really desperate
You start high and may price cuts based on how well things are selling. Its basic economics, its not desperate. I refuse to believe it costs them anywhere near what they are selling them at. Thats like the lie console manufacturers tell gamers.

ati should drop the prices and pown again nvidia
And go bankrupt because of the Phenom?

Both are doing under par when compared to original estimates. ;)

PS. Lets face it..... Nvidia just wanted too much profit based on their recent track record and then they finaly get competition and have to adjust prices. Its just business. But it is a good trend to see lower prices in general.... thats for sure. :)

Soon all are for sale except Intel who has "only" a 9.6% drop AMD has 26% and NVIDIA 34% seem America's economy is falling apart....no need for Bin L

We have the real terrorists right here, in office...

That's the main reason why.

the 260 ties or beats the 4870 at the same price, a cut down G200 core on a 256bit bus could take on the 4850 is what i said. Overall if i could afford a 260 or 4870 its 260 for me
Wouldn't that rain all over 9800GTX(+) sales. Thats the last thing they need, even though a GTX can keep up with a 4850 with minor deficiencies. When milking one chip hurts another, its only detrimental. But the G200 doesn't deserve to be milked

Well it would save them money id bet, cut production of G92, only have G94, G96 and G200 being produced, use the defective G200 cores that cant even be used for the GTX260 and do what AMD did with the R600 cores unfit for full, make a cut down version and recoup as much loss as possible.

Its been done alot actully

With the G92 moving to 55nm, I doubt they will cut sales. Besides, they don't really need to cut the GT200 down that much to compete with the HD4850, the 9800GTX+ already does that. I don't think they will cut production on the G92 any time soon, they have too many good cards at the lower price points that use it.

However, like I've said, if they cut the GT200 core down on more time. Go down to a 384-bit bus, 768MB of RAM, 144 Shaders, 48 Texture Units, and 24 ROPs. Sell it for $250 and they would have a very nice card on their hands, and a way to get rid of those cores that can't make it as a 260GTX. It would also help them cut production costs since they won't be wasting as many cores.

Hell, they could even call it the 8800GTX+.

They would sell more of them than anything  But I think if they did that, all hell would break loose. It would be interesting to see how a g200 with 8800GTX specs would perform.
