ASUS has decided to run around and release a new MATRIX card, the EAH4850 MATRIX/HTDI/512M. The particular card is powered by a 55nm RV770 GPU with 800 Stream Processors, has 512MB of GDDR3 memory and the proprietary dual-slot Hybrid Cooler. While the EAH4850 MATRIX might sound like it’s going to be an overclocked card thanks to its bigger cooler, it’s not. It carries the stock 625MHz core and 1986MHz DDR memory clock. Instead the card comes with an integrated hardware and software set of controls that makes adjustments to the GPU and memory voltages depending on the card load and mode. ASUS software is also monitoring the card's GPU, memory, Power IC, and ambient temperatures. The MATRIX Radeon HD 4850 is expected to hit the stores in November.

That review is concerning the N9600GT Matrix which uses that HS design. There is no information regarding fan speed so it's really inconclusive for those results. If you look here there is a snap shot with fan speed set to auto. What we have to be mindful of is that the EAH4850 Matrix also use a similar heatsink design (as noted in the OP). We really can't draw any comparisons between the 9600 GT Matrix and the EAH4850 Matrix.

Looks like kind of a failed cooler. Then again, if the software/BIOS could be tweaked so the fan speed was higher, it may work better. If the price jump isn't too bad, and I don't want to blow a whole lot on a 4870x2 for my mATX rig, I may get one of these and slap a nice aftermarket cooler on it.

Its a 4xxx series card, and ATi's new 8.10 drivers have a fan-speed control in the control panel in ATi's Catalyst Control Center. :toast: So im sure the HSF will work just fine, I bet its alot better than the other 4850's:shadedshu

Oh sweet! They did implement that! (sorry, been without anything to build/tweak/etc. for more than a few months now :shadedshu) I'd probably still stick an aftermarket cooler on it, or watercool it. The black PCB is worth an extra $30 IMO.

I want this SO bad. Does anyone know if its got a custom PCB? If it does I might trade my old 4850 in for this if its around 170$ by xmas!
