AMD would be releasing its 45nm silicon-based desktop CPUs, built on the Deneb, Propus, Heka, Rana and Regor cores, to bring out quad-core, triple-core and eventually dual-core processors. AMD has discarded the 5-digit number scheme that was earlier reported, and in its place, adopted a three-digit scheme. The quad-core Deneb chips get a 9xx model number and 8xx number depending on the clock-speeds and cache size, Propus-based chips get the Athlon X4 branding.
Heka-based chips get Phenom II X3 7xx branding, with Rana getting Athlon X3 4xx. Regor dual-core trails with Athlon X2 2xx. It is important to note that AMD seems to have made a critical change to the Deneb core, releasing 2 models based on cache-arrangements. The first kind features a total of 8 MB cache (4x 512K L2 + 6M L3) and one with 6 MB total cache. To learn more about the other cores, please refer to our older article getting into details (here).
There's a bit about the processors' launch schedule given as well, all the purple marked numbers are AM3 package based, while green ones are AM2+. Another slide reveals that AMD will come up with a multiplier-unlocked Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition (AM2+) in Q1, 2009. AMD itself projects this chip to have overclocking potential far beyond 4.00 GHz on liquid-cooling, which it describes as "Massive Headroom". We're trying to source larger images at the moment.

Wait a minute.. Where is our Phenom II 945 Black Edition in February? I couldn't imagine an arguably simple transition to AM3 would result in a lower clock speed.
Also, any word if AMD will be using triple channel memory in the near future? It would make things easier (and less expensive imo).

So a Phenom II x3 and 2 4830s would be a dragon?
Dragon is a phenom II proc, with a 790 series board, and and a 4800 series card. This will be phazed out after the introduction of the 8 series boards which leo will take over.

and use my Biostar 790GX board it would be a dragon but when the 8xx comes out it would be a leo if i got a new board? BTW not saying that i am going to do any of this
by: p_o_s_pcThat is what I believe AMD is presenting it as, Dragon makes more sense as there is a change to the graphics cards and proc, which in the case of spider, which required a phenom a 7 series board, and 3800series card.

Dragon will get phased out and replaced with Leo which I believe uses 8 series and in the case of 8 series you will see the change to ddr3, and also probably a subplatform, called pisces. As in the case of the Sub platform cartwheel which required a phenom X3, 780G board and radeon 3 series card if I'm correct.
