AMD has reportedly slated two models of its Phenom II series processors for January, 2009. According to Greek website hwbox.gr, the company will be launching two high-end processors from the Phenom II X4 series, on the 9th of January. Details of these processors available at this point in time are:
  • AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition (HDZ940XCGIBOX), 3.00 GHz, Socket AM2+, 8 MB cache (2 MB total L2 + 6 MB L3), 125W TDP.
  • AMD Phenom II X4 920 (HDX920XCGIBOX), 2.80 GHz, Socket AM2+, 8 MB cache (2 MB total L2 + 6 MB L3), 125W TDP.
There is no word on the prices, at this point, though they are expected to be "much lower" than those of the Intel Core i7.

Much lower price is awesome. I may be jumping ship in January, if the DDR3 boards are available then.

Would I go with AMD if they offered a CPU as good as Core i7? Yes, of course!

everyone is itching to be with AMD again

From what I'm hearing, performance may fall between C2D and i7, with prices a bit lower than current C2D/C2Q offerings. That could be a sweet spot. :)

I'd be more than happy with a chip that cost half as much and offered half the performance. At least then I'd know I'd be getting my money's worth, and that's good enough for me.

so they have a 125W TDP again ... that's the only thing i dislike atm

I Thought That The AMD Phenom II's were AM3+ not AM2+ Am I wrong:toast:

well some of didn't see it, me being one of them so thx btarunr, and i hope these things are in between c2d and i7, the i7 doesn't actually seem to be that much better than the c2d in gaming http://www.techspot.com/review/124-intel-core-i7-920-940-965/page11.html like what 1-3fps i don't see how phenom 2, if it has worked out some bugs and architectural disadvantages/flaws how it couldn't compete, though i think for them to win the server arena they'll need to have nice low TDP's for those CPU's which they've always done pretty well. lets hope amd pulls together on this one:toast: the desperately need to get back to competitor statis so we can see i7 prices drop faster and so ATI isn't keeping itself and AMD alive.

Yes. Phenom II come in AM2+ and AM3 flavours. These two are AM2+. AM3 ones are to be called xx5. eg: the AM3 equivalent for Phenom II 940 would be Phenom II 945.

Heh I wish I could say the same. If they are like 200$ I will go for one definitely.

That's a sweet spot for me too! I think that would be reasonable enough. Probably a very good Price / perf ratio from what you say... :)

:) Awesome news. I've been saving money JUST for the Deneb. I'm ready to buy the 940 BE the day it goes on sale.

From what I understand, if you want to go AM3/ddr3, stay away from these two. AM2+ processors only have a ddr2 memory controller in them. The AM3 processors will have a combo controller and can be used in am2+/am3, but I don't believe you can use an AM2+ processor in an AM3 board (unless Asrock makes another combo board -remember the am2 boards with ddr/ddr2 support?)

Curious naming scheme these chips have...920 and 940?? Seems a bit i7-ish lol
by PCpraiser100 (4:09 PM) - Reply
If they manage to say hi to i7 in game benchmarks, I'm definitely getting this. Are they going to have motherboards that got DDR2 and DDR3 slots?

It's just marketing. They have to name the chips similarly to Intel's or the average consumer isn't going to know how to judge what's comparable to what. And if a Phenom II X4 920 is comparable to an i7 920 (at least in price/performance), then it does its job. :D

guys, any word on Phenom FX, i know it was on the roadmap posted a couple of months ago, but i havent heard anything since????

So if the lowest Core i7 is 269...much lower should translate into around 200 if not less. Nice. I think Ill grab the Phenom II x4 940 BE!!

ooooooooooo sounding better every news release

Hummmm, the Phenom II does sound good. If you can get a Black Edition for a low (or lower) price then i7 and the performance is there at defualt (and OC to ~4GHz on air) AMD could have a winner on their hands. I may have to build one of these too ;) ***edit*** My guess is if the performance is there then Intel will lower prices of the Core i7 and or Core 2 Quad line to match. Could see some nice price wars but to the high OC goes the spoils ;)

well, isnt AM2+ only AM2+ and AM2 compatible, so you must have AM3 deneb for AM3 motherboards, there is a nice thing about AM3 Denebs as they support AM2+, AM2 and AM3 motherboards ;)
