AMD will be launching its 45nm desktop CPU lineup with two of its flagship CPUs, the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition and Phenom II X4 920, clocked at 3.00 GHz and 2.80 GHz respectively. Retailers can start selling these two processors in the processor in a box (PIB) form starting from January 8.
The suggested retail prices for the EMEA region according to NordicHardware are around 250€ for the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition and 220€ for the Phenom II X4 920. The same source points at the US markets' suggested pricing, which states US $280 for the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition, and $230 for the Phenom II X4 920. This puts AMD's flagship processor in the price range of Intel's Core i7 920 and Core 2 Quad Q9450 processors, while AMD's platform costs will be much lower than those of the Intel Core i7.

Not half bad considering some prelim. performance reports on the new Phenoms.
prices are spot on, i promised myself never to spend over 250 for a cpu so the new 940 BE is perfect.
In Greece are already out for sale from 24 December .

Not bad prices, I expect them to drop about $30 each after a bit of hype has worn off by febuary. Thats when I'll be looking to get one.

Wow those are nice prices on Euros, Id like them to be that here. However, these are great prices and I dont mind waiting to get a 940 BE :)
I hope the reviews for these are good. Even if they are still behind the C2Q's slightly clock for clock(and I'm not saying they are, I'm just saying IF they are), with these prices a drop from Intel is a must.
I've been itching to pick up a Q9650 as the final upgrade to my main 775 rig, and if these prices are accurate, the Q9650 will have to drop to close to that price to compete. I'll definitely be picking one up then. Prices on the i7's should drop too.
Finally some competition in the high end quad market...I'm loving it!

I am so glad AMD kept their promise. I thought the prices were $330CAN for 920 and $380CAN for 940.

I still don't see the point in buying these if you're an overclocker. A Q6600 will perform just about the same clock for clock (based on early benchmarks)
The Q6600 could be found for as cheap as £120 in some places (far cheaper than the EU price of the PII 920), easily clocked to around 3GHz+ with stock cooling, although the PII could be easily clocked higher to around 4GHz~ it still lags behind the 'ancient' Q6600 as the best bang for buck quad.

If Intel drops their price AMD will be forced to drop their price even more... still no solution for AMD. They need higher clockspeeds.

Please keep this in line with the OP guys. Come on it really isn't hard. Phenom II is the right price IMO. It will do very well in practical use, and produces very little heat. Low cost, low heat. Sounds like a steal for those HD guys and LAN gamers. Let's see them convince ATi to go low heat now :laugh:

Phenom 2's performance is fairly close to the i7's, its just that the bandwidth is blocked since there is no tri-channel mobo yet for AM3. This means that if your dealing with a latency-sensitive 3+ threaded app, you're in trouble cause one core has to travel far just to communicate to the other die, which is a performance concern for gamers too. As a result, the i7 has to mostly rely on the QPI interface to achieve great performance, not HT. With this explained, this is why the Phenoms perform very well in GTA 4.
Besides, if I'm wrong, AMD will just release Phenom FX to probably counter back with similar specs.

I think the P2's have an awesome price for what they are, even though they are still marked up for launch profits. In a month, the 940 will probably be $250 or less. I'm just waiting for the AM3 cpu's.
Does anyone know of ANY AM2+ boards that will work with these OUT OF THE BOX? Or if they are releasing new mobos? Main reason I ask is I have an old AM2 board/cpu so I'd need to most likely flash the BIOS, which I don't think is very viable for me.
