they got bored with their other designs, and took a page from xiggys book. that said, the fan controller looks nice. i always liked the fan mates that came with the 7000 coolers.

the little knob at the top of the base on the back of the heatsink is that a manual fan speed controller?

Added another pic, although its small, its adds a bit more info, it seems that, the controller actually clips into the top of the HSF, hence why you think you can see another one. :)

you gotta admit thats a damn nice way to get a fan controller in there, integrating it with the heatsink. Edit: you can also just make out the writing "High performance super thermal grease" oh lol, what a name.

whats the point of a controller on the HS? Can you run it like a wire to extend out of the case? Or at least in an empty PCI slot? I guess I'm not seeing why a push button fan controller on the heatsink would be beneficial since its inside the case. :confused:

Hopefully they can break the trend in cooling products where the more gimmicky your product looks, the more it sucks at cooling. I'd rather they skipped the fan controller gimmick and just make it cheaper. Because if they wasted time developing something like that, then it had better have amazing cooling performance, as well as have a pristine mounting mechanism. Otherwise they wasted their time on the whole thing.

Good question, it'd work very well in my application where I can rip the side off my CM HAF932 in seconds and since my PC is on a stand and my CPU cooler is about eye level, say I want to change the fan speed to Hi mode or whatnot for overclocking, 2 screws and a button push does the trick. I am using an old Zalman FanMate 2 from my 7700Alcu cooler to control the fan speed of the Scythe fan on my Xig atm, it's screwed to the MB tray, it's fairly easy to access but nowhere near as easy as the implementation in Zalman's new cooler. Hard saying if that little fan controller would be as useful away from Zalman products like the Fan Mate 2 is tho. But I can definately see some people really appreciating having that there, one less thing to mount, less wires to route, overall a clean look and a nice implementation, I like this new cooler and hope it's performance is really good, I may have to grab one again to enjoy Zalman quality, it's been a long time. :D

Whoo! I'm excited; I personally love Zalman, but their wind tunnel designs just haven't been doing great compared to the other coolers out there. Hopefully this takes them back to the top! And the remote looks awesome. Almost as if it were some kind of taser...

Na that design as all the other tower designs are following Thermalright, staggered heatpipes etc. Thermalright was the original innovator of this type of cooler. The only new innovation is direct touch , which doesn't make that big of a difference and that came from XIGGY and isn't even used on this cooler.

HDT from xiggy does make a difference, its how they manage to match a true with a cooler that has less fins, less copper, and overall cheaper design.
