AMD is expected to introduce a series of price-cuts next month, for its ATI Radeon HD 4800 series graphics products. The price-cuts may amount to as much as US $50, perhaps taking advantage of the low manufacturing costs. The cuts also come ahead of the time-frame in which the company will introduce a DirectX 11 compatible future-generation of ATI Radeon, to sync with the commercial launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system.
When implemented, the price of the high-end Radeon HD 4890 is expected to be $199, down $50 from its current price of $249. Radeon HD 4870 will sell for $149 from its current listing price of $199, although there needs to be some clarity on how the 1 GB and 512 MB variants are positioned. Finally, the Radeon HD 4850 will enter the $100 realm, to substitute the Radeon HD 4770, which seems to be suffering an acute stock shortage.

I still have a 4870 512mb... wonder if I should dump it on eBay and use my 850 for the meantime, then wait for the 1GB 4870 to go down. Not playing much right now anyway.
by: laszloThat's why I never buy anything more expensive than mid-range. If I only spend $70 on a card, and in two years it costs $40, I'm not out much.

by: mdm-adphBecause it's on the new 40 nm process, and apparently all's not well with 40 nm and TSMC. AMD has no problems selling the more powerful HD 4850 for the same price. So consumers have nothing to worry about.
I find it hilarious the smallest and cheapest chip (which is supposed to lead to high yields, right?) is suffering a stock shortage. Or are they just being bought as quick as they can fly off the shelves?
I wonder if the 4830 will drop in price, I've been eyeing that XFX single slot 4830.

Ive been runnin 2 4870's in crossfire for last 5 months. Im looking to see what the HD5xxx offers and the variants.
mid range now is high enud to rn games at full spec at a decent frame rate but high end is overkill good for future proofing but really if you can afford a £300 gpu then you are probly going to upgrade it again soon

What about 4870X2? I wouldn't mind a second one for Quad Fire. The 4870 would find a happy home in Rig number 2 if the prices on the X2 dropped enough.

Ima shoot somebody. The HIS HD 4870 that I paid $200 just arrived at my doorstep. Oh well, I guess now it'll take some of the pain from my wallet when it's time to go Crossfire.

No, the 512MB and teh 1GB won't be the same price. Yes, you can Crossfire a 512MB and a 1GB card, but the 1GB will only use 512MB of it's memory, so it's pointless for you to buy a 1GB 4870 for Crossfire, unless it's your only option.

You're at the AIBs mercy, who will take turns in selling their cards for <$350~$380, while other partners stay above $399. It shouldn't matter where you buy the card from, it's all the same :)

by: kyle2020Think we're in the same boat. ;) If the price drops on the same Gainward 4870 I have, I think I might pick up another and move over to a 24" monitor.
Lets see if these cuts make it across the pond. If so, 4870's in crossfire look quite tasty . . .
