Scythe Setsugen VGA Cooler Pictured

Scythe is designing a new VGA cooler aimed at broad compatibility and a relatively compact built. The Scythe Setsugen will be the first VGA cooler from Scythe to formally support NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2x0. It uses a slightly smaller, slimmer overall design, and makes use of the recently announced Slip Stream 120 mm fan, which enables the cooler to stay within the limits of two expansion slots.

Its construction involves a copper GPU contact block from which four heat-pipes arise. Two heatpipes make convey heat to an aluminum fin block each (two in all). The blocks make an enclosure for the Slip Stream fan to stay closest to the GPU, blowing air away from the PCB, rather than on it. The kit includes heatsink for the NVIO2 processor and a heatsink that matches the VRM area of the P651 PCB, along with heatsinks for the memory. The cooler will remain compatible with most other GPUs from NVIDIA and ATI. Scythe is expected to announce this soon.

nice! they could add the ability to put one more 120mm fan on the outside if space isnt a problem

Seems like adding another fan on top would be benefitial, or even two more fans ontop...

Adding better fan(s) would be more beneficial. The fans are rubbish if you want real good cooling.

I have to of them here and not impressed at all with them.

Not all NVIDIA cards, the ones based on GT200 and G80 do. They have the NVIO processor, the GPU uses an IHS that raises it, and has a 52 mm rm hole spacing.

If I'm looking at that right, that contact block isn't going to be nearly enough to cover the entire GT200 IHS. I'm pretty sure this cooler isn't going to work well with only that single slim fan.

Ok that makes enough sense. After thinking about it I realized why; ATI cards don't have any extra chips, use lower heat GDDR5, and have a smaller GPU area.

I have noticed though that there are a lot more coolers that are compatible with nvidia cards. I'm looking for a decent cooler for a HD4890 that exhausts air out the back and but I've only been seeing new coolers for nvidia cards. I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer.

Looks like my VGA cooler has finally arrived! :toast:

I've been looking for something like this that won't take up 3-5 PCI slots. I just hope that it's quiet, cools decently enough and doesn't cost more than $45.

Does anyone know of any formal reviews of these fans?

You are so full of... Keep the red vs green crap out of this. These coolers can't cool nvidia cards well enough and I only know this because none of these take care of the VRMs which get hot on all cards. Small heatsinks don't work well enough, and honestly this past generation's coolers for both the GTX200 and 4800 cards have been much better than the after market companies have been able to provide. Kudos to Scythe for trying to market their fans? The BIG freaking disappointment is how much this obviously sucks for cooling the card itself.

Im not saying ATI is better than nvidia or anything, nor I am I saying this is a bad cooler. I believed all of the obvious observations and statements have been made about this cooler, so I asked a simple question, which btarunr answered for me.

I agree with you though, the latest aftermarket coolers really have been a disappointment. The stock coolers cool really well, but they are either loud or they don't leave a lot of room for overclocking. In the case of the 4890 cooler it is LOUD.

I don't know about you, but these Slipstreams are pretty damn good for the price. I've had some Artic Cooling fans before, but the Slipstreams are way better.

Don't know about price of the fans. I had 2 with another cooler for 4870 which i have on a 4890 now and they cool the regs worse than the stock cooler even though 1/2 the stock cooler is still on the card lol.

Heatsinks hot and fans cannot cool faster enough.. hoping to get the chance ( money ) to put some real fans on it..

I'm with Binge on this... 3rd party coolers are cheap rubbish. By now they should of started push pin heat sinks at a much larger size too.

It doesn't need to cover the whole IHS. GT200 chips is only about 2/3 of the IHS it self. Accelero Xtreme GTX 280 doesn't cover even close the hole IHS and cools quite remarkably, check out my thread under nvidia forum (http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=89018)

Last part is correct on GTX 280, the fan is too far from the VRM are to cool it. For other cards in GT200, it'll be fine compared to stock cooler.

edit: oh, looked at it wrong. The fan would be half on top the VRM are too, but it's pulling air from the card, not pushing it to it. Won't be enough to keep VRMs going over 100C still.

This fan would exhaust air out of your side window if you reverse the fan in it ;)

My thought is to lose that fan, and strap 2 decent 120mm fans on top. That should supply decent airflow, but you lose another slot. Now I'm really impressed with their Musashi cooler which I have on my 4850 toxic, so one hopes this is not too bad.

This is probably equivalent or worse. I dont know why scythe opts to use such thick contact blocks, rendering potentially potent coolers, weak. I wonder why the fan blows downwards instead of drawing air into the fins, it just seems utterly stupid to blow against the convection currents (up). Scythe really needs new engineers..
