A new list of features surraunding the upcoming RTS franchise Star Craft 2 that might interest you were announced today. Starting with the big one, Blizzard has confirmed that Star Craft 2 will not support LAN multiplayer mode. The game will be entirely online based, multiplayer connections will go through Battle.net only, no LAN connections will be allowed.
Blizzard today also posted a new 7 minute video footage of some ingame action. Units from all the three races are captured in the video, you can watch it in high quality here.
Also unveiled during an interview with Shacknews was that players will be able to hire NPC mercenaries and use them in the single player mode campaign. StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder also detailed that again in single player campaign mode, there'll be additional objectives and optional quests which if completed will give players different bonuses. You can read the full interview with Dustin Browder right here.

by: malware:mad: Greedy f*cks, I bought all their games (except World of Warcraft) 'till now. this one I'd boycott for the audacity doing this... this is basically a MMO if there's no LAN there.

WoW and all MMO's are destroying lives as we speak. Siphoning money like crazy is all Blizzard cares about lately. Pay per month bullcrap...
A big F you on my behalf to any blizzard corporate schmo reading this. I have nothing against the designers/techies.
I bet you will have to pay to use the servers as well. Which is a shame, as if this is true, i wont be playing on the official servers... why should i have to pay every month for a game that i just wanna play.
If buts and maybes at the moment though.
Those screen shots do look good.

^ even if you dont have to pay a monthly subscription it's still wrong. Whenever I play Starcraft it's with my friends in a friendly lan game.
It's probably a matter of time till it'll get hacked into accepting unofficial servers. I'm not particularly pro piracy but I hope they get what they fear most.

if there is no lan play in this, i will not buy it. end story.
if there is no lan play in diablo III, i wont buy that either.
its a very simple thing - i have housemates and friends who bring their PC's here. there is no way 4-8 of us are going to go online have all our data bounce off battlenet and then back down my internet, to play a LAN game.
edit: thats weird, the title says LAN is axed, but its not in the actual article?
edit 2: seperate link for that article.

^It's in the second source link:
The choice of excluding a LAN feature "is because of the planned technology to be incorporated into Battle.net," a topic they will reveal more about at a later date."

if they make it so you need a working battle net account for LAN play to stop pirates, fine. if they make it so you cant play on a LAN at all - fuck em. they WILL lose a lot of sales over that.
^Yes but theoretically it's just DRM then, Game connects to battle net to verify, then allows LAN session.
I don't imagine this requiring a difficult "spoof" for those technologically inclined. (Notice how I avoid using the words "hack, hacker, etc"?:p )
They wouldn't say "LAN is out" that's worse publicity than using the word DRM.
Why am I even bothering. I much prefer TBS to RTS anyday. I'm just sorry for those that will end up Blizzard's cashcow

by: Black Hadesthats what you'd expect... but the guy actually says no lan.

must...have..it...now!
If they have some plan to make this game a monthly subscription then i won't buy it.
WTF , they imagine we live in a blizzard world and we need to pay them money every month ? some of us have a life to live , we play ocasionally and we don't plan to pay every month for a game.
Pirates , crack this shit fast , i hope they crack it before it even reaches the stores , it happened with some games.

I am playing Starcraft 1 since '98 . Best balanced strategy game out there . Sure the 2d graphics sucks but the true gamers go for the gameplay , not for the eye candy . Now i saw the battle reports in the SC2 and i can say the developers are on the right track , doing a good job . But all forgot one thing , the most important one : the key of success was having fun playing games . I remember going to i-cafe`s , lan`s , etc. and enjoy the multiplayer mode with my friends . Thats why Counter-strike and ST1 are the only low end games that are still played as we speak ... Don`t know about you , but ill still buy the game . Sure the Battle net make`s me sick ... but if you want to enjoy the game you have to play by their rules . I am against piracy , and to be honest .. i think going through Battlenet is the only possible way the game wont be cracked , so less cheating and less piracy doesn't hurt anybody . Valve did that going for Steam . You don`t like cheaters when playing online? You have to purchase the game . we all hated this strategy , but for the moment it`s the only one that works . And yes they gain more money ... Blizzard is doing just that . I don`t know about you but im waiting for Diablo3 . At least battlenet is a good thing in Diablo , since the LAN multiplayer has no point , and you can`t play singleplayer forever . And yea the user that posted about the WOW thing is right ...
Anyway -1 for Blizzard ( selfish bastards ) , the marketing area , not the game developers .

I'm not buying it, that's for sure. My friends who want to fight with S.Korea over who has more pylons can enjoy.

It cannot be cracked , that`s the point . The only hackers around will be the morons that will steal accounts . Happens with STEAM everyday . Trojans , keyloggers , scams , you name it.
Ok lets say you crack the game , but you cant play it online , you can`t play on LAN , what`s the point?
by: MusselsI'll buy them both just for single player. I do agree both games do need lan as i always here people saying thats how they play it or used to.

Isn't Battle.net a free service anyways ?. They said 6 years ago as people were worried about D2 and them starting to charge people. As long as Battle.net stays free i'm happy :).
I respect the the group that worked for the development of Counter-strike . A bunch of students in a freaking basement created a free mod , the best game out there . Yea it was free , you had Hl , you had CS for free . Valve made cssource , witch is bullsh** , and they charge you for it .
Looks like i was right a few years ago when i said we won`t have great games anymore . So ok , ill play CS and ST1 with my 2Gb ddr video card , no problem ...

I dont see what the big deal is here.
If you go to a LAN party you can still play the same way as before, just just need to connect to the internet log into a free B.net account and play.
Maybe im missing some thing.

yup .. it`s just anti piracy .

Steam is cracked everyday , a few days later from an official patch and you get the latest cracked version , problem is you can't join legal servers , only cracked.
I own games that i like from steam , but i know the underground comunity and they even have steam games in their original package , no crack , no viruses/spyware/keyloggers.
Hint , go google cs rin ru .
The screenshot with the big robot is an April fool joke.
Ridiculous. Without LAN play I won't be buying SC2. That's one of the defining characteristics of Starcraft is being able to play with friends locally.

This sounds rather insulting.:shadedshu
But the fact is many South Koreans prefer to play Starcraft with their friends on Net Cafes will not be happy about this either. (As for no LAN battles):slap:
I'm not so sure that they will be taking out LAN play completely. I do believe though you need to log-in to Battle.net first for verification that you actually own the game, then there would probably be a bunch of options for network play.
this game was supose to come out when i was in senior year HS..... im 25 now. Hype = over
WTF blizz...
geez.. no LAN?? wth. They may have seen the piracy rate on PC rental shops in Korea and decided therel' be no fun for them this time round. (heck in fact, there was no fun for them at the start. Its targeted to chug on their Geforce 4 MX440 oem cards)
I believe they wont charge for bnet though, since its been free ever since 1996 and is still surviving.
