The title says it all. ATI Radeon HD 3870, the one on the second picture will feature 825MHz core and 2400MHz memory clocks, DirectX 10.1 support, and PCI-e 2.0 technology. ATI Radeon HD 2850 on the third picture will be clocked at 700MHz/1800MHz core/memory with DirectX 10.1 support and PCI-e 2.0. Both cards will feature 55nm manufactured graphics processing unit (GPU).

2 things i want to know.

Price and bandwidth of the cards

Hmmm, should I be mad that I just recently bought a HD2900Pro?

I would say be happy. You bought a excellent piece of hardware at a good price, and with 512bit. I am jealous of the 2900Pro owners.

Thanks man, that make me feel a whole lot better.:)

The 3870 better have decent stock cooling. I hope a good enough airflow case will be able to cool that beast down. Although I shouldn't be that worried since its based on 55nm. OCing should be real fun on those things

All we need now is A RELEASE DATE!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't the 2900 series also have 320 stream processors?

yes it does, as does it have physics processing capabilities.

this is "basically" just a die shrink of the R600 with a few extras

so id expect a very nice overclock on these :)

So should I buy a 2900Pro 1gb or wait for this puppy? Keep in mind I wanna stay in the ~$300 price range

When these come out the prices on the other graphics cards should drop unless of course they decide to discontinue some of them which is always a likely case especially for the higher up 2900s

It's the same thing as the 2900XT! It's simply 55nm..

Dont forget that it also has DX 10.1 as well as PCIe 2.0 on it:slap:

the card can be used as a dedicated physics unit, just like the R600 in multi crossfire setups

It will be interesting to see if it actually holds the card back.

Damn unlikely to hold it back I would say TBH.

Weird, but maybe this is like the x1800 x1900 debacle.

That second pic looks like the old x800XTPEs and X850XTPEs with that huge honking cooler on it.

I figure I will buy one of these with the dual slot cooler. My 2600XT that cost me $128 is great for the amount of money, imo. I think one of these cards will be my last upgrade for this 939 system. I had thought about the 2900Pro's alot, but thought my San Diego might not be 100% up to it. One of these should be the bomb for my rig. I can hardly wait. :toast:

Were do these come in the pecking order? high/mid?? thx
by freaksavior (October 20th - 10:16 PM) - Reply
any idea how much they will cost?
by Tatty_One (October 20th - 10:44 PM) - Reply
It's a bit strange to me thats they are of a lower fabrication process but that one still requires a double slot cooler.

Well if the 3870 series is the XT series wouldn't that mean it's got 2xGPU's on the board? Whereas the the 2850 would only have one?

This is very clever economics. ATi/AMD had massive problems and cost in making the super-complex 12-layer PCB to employ that 512-bit bus, and having seen that the R600 is not limited by it's bandwidth they have done the most sensible thing. It should lower prices (though maybe the consumer wont see that) and increase energy-efficiency, and may aid in higher clock rates.

A nice move in my opinion, but the benchmarks will tell. I'm pretty sure G80 will finally meet it's match, it's been a year coming.

For you, anything.

The R600 GPU and the RV670 GPU are identical. The only difference is the manufacturing process, going from 80nm to 55nm (allegedly).

This means that the HD 2900 series and the HD 3800 series will differ solely in clock speed, which is laughable.
And calling is the HD 3870.. makes me think they're trying to screw themselves into the ground intentionally..

And that pisses me off, because I thought that I would FINALLY get to see the Red side get the upper hand, as it had a year ago. But.. I guess there is no red side anymore is there? It's the AMD side now..
