I just built a new comp with Win XP Pro 64 Bit. It seems to have installed the video drivers for me.
Do I really need to go to ATI and install their newest driver? my X800 works fine with the built in ATI drivers and my monitor goes to 2048X1536 no prob..
Any ideas?

Most everyone will suggest you update everysingle possible driver you can to the newest or most stable/ stock windows drivers usually are generic VGA drivers.
i suggest you go download ATIs newest, as they have bug fixes and improved performance/optimizations.

For graphic cards, I've experienced always that the drivers included in Windows don't have as good 3D performance as the chip maker ones, and in some of them, nearly none performance.

Why wouldn't you want to update the VGA drivers? If you don't want to use ATI's you don't have much choice. You can use Omega drivers, but they are just modded ATI Drivers.

There are a few others, like the DHzer0point drivers, but I think more or less all of them are based on the ATI drivers and aren't really any better and often come out later.

First im now using the 6.4 ver.
I guess my point was newer drivers have the control panel, and for that you need MS Net ver1.
I mean itsant it better to keep things simple?
Jimmy 2004 helped me out cause 3DMark05 wouldnt work on my system untill I uninstalled the Nvidia forceware drivers.
Does it really help to always have a newer version (even if the older one works fine)?

its not always better to have the newer drivers, as they may not be stable. and some are optimaized better for difference cards... for older cards like 9*00's ati's ive heard 5.1 was the best ever.
and as of late 6.4 is reported adding widespread instability and graphical errors with most ATI cards.
i suggest either Omega radeon based on 6.3, or ATI's own 6.3
If you have 6.4 now and arnt having any visual screw ups or overclocking problems, go ahead and keep them as its seems to either give massive problems or slight performance increases.
lucky for me and my x1600xt it gave a slight performance increase.

I've had problems with 6.4 as well. I would suggest useing 6.3 until next month's drivers come out.

Don't you have to have special drivers for Windows Xp Proffesional 64-bit Edition?

I wish I could put other dribers than ATI but I can't seem to properly uninstall the ATI drivers... I tried everything. The drivers I do want to install, that I can't are then Omega drivers. They come withg some nice utilities and make the card more speed efficient.

Try Driver Cleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html).

driver cleaner rips all the selected related drivers from your windows install, and especially nice is ripping specific drivers from windows and SP2 .cab's. great for slipstreaming windows, i ripped 389 drivers that were uneccessary to my computer, my windows slipstream can almost fit on a 256mb USB drive. (with SP2 and all updates to date included)

installing Windows Xp Proffesional 64-bit Edition is the problem.. and its doing the opposite to "keeping things simple"..
at this moment in time i would say its pretty much all pain and no gain...
