An update that addresses the 17-year-old kernel bug in Windows XP is causing the Blue Screen of Death.

Consumers still using Windows XP may want to avoid the latest Microsoft security update released on Tuesday. Security blogger Brian Krebs reports that complaints are flooding the Redmond company's support forums, indicating that the update is crippling some systems with the notorious Blue Screen of Death. The systems thus falls into a reboot loop.

My Win7 64-bit install played up something rotten this morning - was just sort of semi catatonic for a few minutes with the HD light on, a brief burst of activity and then more catatonic: kept doing this over and over. Reset was my friend. Not even safe mode helped. WTF?

Then it went away.

This evening it blue screened at switch-on. Once. Now it's ok again and has been running solid for hours. I thought it must be faulty hardware until I saw this THG article.

I can't find this update in my Windows Update history however, even though it does apply to it (several security updates were installed last night). I'm sure this bloody update or security bulletin MS10-015 which this is part of has something to do with it.

Here is how to fix BSOD after installing KB977165:

1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console.

Once you are in the Repair Screen..

2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst

3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt

4. Type this command: systemroot

5. Type this command: exit
Your computer should restart and everything should be back to normal

You have to make sure there is no space between the 5 and $, for some reason most of the other instructions I've found have a space there, and it will tell you no such directory/file when you try. If these directions don't work, then the KB977165 update is not your problem.

As for not updating, I have to completely disagree. In my experience 99% of updates work perfectly fine, it is only the rare case like KB977165 that actually causes a major issue, and chances are the issue only occures because of a piece of malware on the system. It is never a good idea to not update Windows.

+1 NT :) I've put on thousands of updates over the years on many computer and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've had significant problems. Most of the time, you wouldn't even know they're there.

The only difference I ever really notice, is that a fully patched XP SP3 install is slower than an SP2 or earlier build and then really only on an older system.

Then you don't have KB977165 installed, and this isn't what is causing your BSODs.

There is a huge thread over on MS's forum (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/73cea559-ebbd-4274-96bc-e292b69f2fd1) that talks about this issue. This update seems to only effect XP.

It's installed, I can see it in the windows directory.
