Hello,

This is a rather strange question I got here.My pc stopped functioning two weeks ago so after a visit to my local computer shop I got mobo and graphics card replaced. After that, the computer kept on restarting when on windows 7.I had ram replaced, hard drive replaced - even the cpu.And now we reach the final problem :
Whenever I try to install a 64-bit operating system like Windows 7 64-bit or Ubuntu Linux 9.10 64-bit the installation process halts either by a BSOD or by a linux error.Weird thing is that I can install any 32-bit operating system with no problem and it works just fine.My current configuration is as follows

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB),ASUS P5Q Deluxe, Kingston 8GB DDR2-667 Ram Kit (2 x 4 GB, PC2 5400, 5-5-5-18),
1TB HDD WD Sata,
500GB HDD WD Sata,
Nvidia GeForce GTS 250

Also I need to add that Windows 7 Ultimate installation stops during the 'expanding files ' operation. The BSOD refers to a hard disk problem but there is none there - the disk is new and tested thoroughly by a number of diagnostics.Could it be a motherboard incompatibility there or some other hardware issue?I've tried installing (always fresh install on formatted disks) with no usb devices attached and performed a BIOS upgrade but in vain.

Any help would be deeply appreciated

it could be your ram thats caused the bsod - from what ive read thats pretty much the one of parts you havent changed asside from the PSU.

What PSU are you running?

Sorry for that. I can only say that I have a secondary pc running W7 64 on a P5Q mobo without problems.
There are no incompatibilities for SURE with the 8400 processor, the mobo, the RAM, the HDD, the Geforce... if they are in good condition.
What is left:
- you do something wrong
- as you can install 32, but not 64 bits OS, it is BIOS/Driver related. Very strange anyway but remember 64 OS uses completely different drivers. Could be RAID... Disable it and anything but the standard components of the mobo in the BIOS....

@FreedomEclipse : Ram was changed by the shop.I initially had 2 gb ram but i upgraded to 8gb by purchasing 2 completely new 4gb ram kits as described above. My PSU is a TAGAN 600W and problems persist even when i use a different PSU.

@erixx : I cant imagine I 've done something wrong since I've done win7 installation a dozen times on my pc or friends pc.Apart from that, the BSOD appears when there is virtually nothing u can do wrong except maybe the time zone:banghead:
I'll try tweaking the Bios - raid settings a bit more and see that happens but I dont feel optimistic about it ...

Thank you both for your replies

No,used both Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 Ultimate in 64-bit versions that were tested in other computers.

It must be something bios/raid related. There is no other option.

Is "memory remapp" feature in the BIOS enabled?

Edit: I assume you have BIOS version 1306 or newer?

ASUS P5Q mobos don't like certain RAM, make sure you running newest possible BIOS and check if RAM have correct voltage and timings settings.

i ran an asus p5q deluxe with 8 gigs of g.skill pi with a 9650 and an e8400 and it worked fine, x86 and x64. i would suggest getting the newest bios and flashing to that, i was using the latest modded bios from here, http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=65409&highlight=asus+p5+modded+bios

But, you have G.Skill not Kigston or OCZ. P5Qs not like Micron memory chips.

Problem solved when I replaced PSU with a Coolermaster 850W. The power supply unit seemed OK in any test but I changed it anyway and now all problems disappeared...
Thx for your help everybody
