I think my HD is dying. Durring some random occasion while I surf the net or browse files on my HD I get this clicking noise coming from my HD can't do anything and eventually a BSOD. I just attempted a chkdsk and at Stage 2 "Verifying indexes" at 14% it started clicking again and gave a bsod. However I am running it again and its made it to stage 4 now 17%.

So is it dying? Do I need to hurry up and buy an external and backup, how long do I have? I can still access windows and it doesn't always click. Is it possible chkdks will fix it? Running RAID 0 two 200GB.

The click of death is just that; death. Back it up quick.

Right... Well I was hoping there was a fix.

Seems as though I have to go out get an external hope I can backup and then save up for two more Hard Drives... :/

Could someone tell me exactly what the clicking means / comes from??

Any chance it's getting a little hot ?.. Even if you cooled it down should backup and RMA it is available.

It happened with my some of my disks. I took it out and left it sitting on the desk for a few months, after that it started working again.

I updated bios and drivers several time during those months, I have clues which exactly fixed the hdd...

like when a drive powers off, theres a safety system to make sure the head is pulled back safely, so it cant hit the platters even if you shake the drive around. When the drive errors, its hitting that safety and you're hearing the click as it 'parks' in the safe area (think a needle on a record player yanking itself off to the side and whacking the side of the case)

I see.. Thanks. Will be replacing.

Is it a Seagate drive by chance?

Honestly can't remember, I think one is and the other a Western Digital but I'll let you know for sure when I get them out.

Yes you need backup your data ,DONT use chkdks i had same problem and it made things worse [found some problems "orphaned files" (one i remember) and fixed but things got worse while i could log to windows after i performed chkdsk i had problems (could log only at 1 of 7-8 attemps ) most of time windows screen-->restart ] .Btw do you have freezing without BSOD (i had) and have to reset pc ?

If you are running raid0 may be only one has problem after backup test both of them

Thats why i say try cooling the HDD as it's either just a malfunction or a malfuntion caused by heat a friend of mine had the issue with 2 Hitachi HDDs and sugjesed him to keep them cooler and it worked although by time he did do it the damage had already been done as smart keeps these errors even though the error was solved. He still uses them today and it's been 2 years since.

With WD you have a 5 yr warranty so all you have to do is use there warranty check on the website and if its still under warranty then RMA it, no invoice nessesary

O.o i haven't heard the work park and harddrive since i was 18
mine used to sound like a train going down the tracks
(obviously not the sound of it getting louder or quieter:rolleyes:)
but that drive just died, and would have cost a few grand to get it fixed ( and yes i did enquire about the cost)
my advice is get it backed up while ya can ;)

With WD you have a 5 yr warranty

Not necessarily: it can be 5 years, 3 years, 2 years, 1 year, or none (if the drive was sold to a system manufacturer, they set the warranty period and handle that service). Check WD's Warranty Policy and Limitations (http://support.wdc.com/warranty/policy.asp?custtype=end&lang=en) page for more info.

Your best bet is to go WD's Warranty Check (http://websupport.wdc.com/warranty/serialinput.asp?aspsid=179830403&custtype=end&requesttype=warranty&lang=en) page and enter the serial number of your drive.

Thanks everyone for the tips and concerns. I will be checking to see my warenty on the Hard Drives when I get home today. I haven't used my PC since my last attempted chkdsk which failed after a really long time anyways. I'm just going to wait until I get an external before I turn it on again. :/
