Well my current system is still running good and my ultra's are fine, though I want to upgrade. I can spend $1500 on a whole new system with i5- 750 with a 5850+ new case and everything else new, or I can use my current system and just get a 5850/5870 and a new case. How much bottleneck would I get with my cpu @ 3.6ghz? It's an intel e7400 dual core. And would i get much bottleneck at stock setting on my cpu @ 2.8ghz?
If I will get bottleneck, I will just buy the new system:
i5-750
5850/5870
Corsair 750w psu
4gb ddr3 ram corsair
eVGA P55v SLi + Xfire Capable
Using my velociraptor for OS, two 500g caviar blacks for games+ storage
Haven't chosen case yet-spending around $200 on case
Already got OS Win 7 Ult 64 bit
Already got mouse/keyboard/screen
I live in Australia so everything is a bit more expensive;)
Thanks:D

Based on what I've read, a HD 5870 preforms better with either a high clocked dual core or a quad core, in order not to get bottlenecked. I guess other things should come into matter too, in order to state that your system would bottleneck such card, but I think you OC'ed E7400 should do nicely. I mean, even if it bottlenecks the card, it must be only by a small percentage.
(I also would like to know, because I share the same CPU. It's a question of cash that decides my next GPU...although I think I'll stick with a HD 5750)

If I were you bro, I would buy the HD5850 first to see the performance that you get, and if you are quite happy with it, then you can save your money and keep the setup that you got, if you're not convinced that its not performing for your needs, then go for a awesome upgrade:toast:
PS. if you do buy a new system or just a HD5850 & case, where are you buying from? Since we live in the same city, I could help more:toast:

I had a 5770 that I had to RMA, but I paired it with a Core 2 Duo E8200 no OC- stock at 2.66GHz and it was bottlenecked. In some games the performance boost was negligible sadly like TF2... while others I had a huge bump in performance like Starcraft II.
Anyway like all things it all depends on what res you want to run it at. I suggest you buy the cards first, see if you're satisfied with the performance, and if you're not OC or buy a new system. You have the luxury of OCing whereas I don't since I bought my box from HP. Though that'll change soon in 2 weeks :)

+1 all the way. :toast: By just throwing the 5850 in there you will notice a big improvement.

K thanks guys, I'll slap in a 5850 within the next 20/30days since thats around the time i get my money for my birthday:D;) If it bottlenecks, I'll just but a new system, or maybe a new cooler since my cpu is running on stock and I could get it to 4ghz+.
