Free Standalone dedicated servers for Brink:
- No words on Linux or LAN yet (see comments below FAQ link)
This means anybody can set up a server , without buying the game.
But it's via Steamworks (meh)

Well , im going to be neutral on this, but i have my thought which i will keep them to my self.
some are saying that true (hardcore, pro, advanced win/linux users) PC users dislike steam because of the control and no way to buy retail games, everything goes throuhg the fancy fancy service which developer rely on a buggy system, and the steam hypers actually steered away from collector editions and bonuses, steam actually being a "beautiful" way of preparing the PC audience for payable DLC , also claiming that steam-fanboys were traitors to the PC community
and stuff like that , hehe , make your own conclusion

reading that post damn near made my head explode.....
make your own conclusion
My conclusion is the steam backend is about the simplest system ever devised for setting up game servers
