View Full Version : Aliens landed, what tech should they share?

A hypothetical situation:

We are not alone in the universe, and our kindred spirits do not want to serve us with a side of fava beans. Tomorrow the aliens land. What technology do you wish they had and could share with us?

Will it be altruism that guides you, or utter escapism. Usual posting rules about inflamatory/patently offensive material can be found here: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/announcement.php?f=77. Otherwise go nuts.

I will start the discussion with my selfish desires: a virtual reality simulation that can accurately determine complex interactions down to the subatomic level. Imagine being able to mix chemicals, design mechanical systems, and model complex natural systems without ever negatively impacting the real world.

orrrrrrrrrrr, cpu's and gpu's that'll cost £20 and be 10 x 10^99999999999 faster then our current ones

Faster than light drive, or whatever equivalent they have. I wants to travel the stars, dammit!

I've thought about that, and I think that would be pretty harmful. I'm thinking addictives. There are some people that are truly addicted to games, and many more to alcohol and various drugs. A perfect virtual reality would be the ultimate escape, the ultimate drug. So I'm not sure I would want that.

Not sure what I would want them to share.

I'd like to know how to make an abundance of food and water anywhere in the world without destroying the environment or sadistically torturing animals.

It'd also be nice if they could show us how they managed to balance religion and society without blemishing our dignity and freedom.

If we get that taken care of, I'd like a pint of Westvleteren (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westvleteren_Brewery) or one of their alien brews (assuming they're better). :D

You forgot the impregnating of dozens of helpless alien maidens.

I'd like to see how their cow mutilator works. Not so much with the anal probing.

7 posts before we've hit the sci-fi equivalent of "Earth Girls are Easy" (it was a movie, look it up). That has to be a new record, I had assumed that it would have been sooner.

I was thinking like an engineer. Right now we approximate thing with equations and trial by fire. It would be nice to have the ethical high ground when doing "animal" testing where no animals get hurt.

As far as addiction, that's a downer we would have to cope with no matter what. Leap frogging forward with technology, without adequate social development, is something that would be rather scary.

I would ask them if they have tech that could run Crysis.

They come down and say, "What is this weird 'God' thing you guys have?"

Then they teach us tolerance and humility and we start co-operating and build our first working fusion reactor and all our energy problems are sorted.

Aliens simply will take our technology

so they can go millions of light years easily but a plasma TV or core i7 is far out of their reach?

+1........

Someone/something out there has to have figured out how to make an entire species cooperate and not want to commit genocide.

(/ not a fun day at work.)

We have plenty of technology that they don't have. http://www.generalnonsense.net/showthread.php?t=6136 for instance.
