Server: 8.9.17.135:28960
Host: GameServers.com (http://www.gameservers.com)
Problem: Lag spikes every 8 or 18 seconds

To get a feel for the problem, go to the server and flip on your lagometer (in console [~] enter cg_drawLagometer 1) and look for the spikes.

My clan got this server two years ago and until about a week ago, hardly used it at all. A week ago we started working on getting it active and began noticing the lag spikes. We have it streaming PBBans, and we also have a stats system that pulls the games_mp.log file hourly. Both were running before the spikes started hitting. Until three days ago, it was a 12-slot server (now 24). The change in slots had no impact on the lag.

GameServers offered to move us to a new machine and IP (saying that would "probably fix the problem"). We replied that we don't want to have to change our IP (and inevitably lose some of an established crowd of regulars) every time GS has performance issues. They said there is nothing else they can do to resolve it. I think it goes without saying that part of quality game server hosting is not having to change IPs regularly to keep performance decent.

What I'm gathering is that GS decided to add more CoD4 servers to the machine ours is on, back when our server was dead. Now that it's picking up, perhaps the server is overloaded.

I'm looking for advice on what to do about this. How should we play it with GS? Should we move to a new machine and IP and clarify that we intend to get this server to the point of being at 90% capacity the majority of the time in the future, so they don't overload the server again (if in fact that's what happened)? Should we seek other hosts? Alternatives?

We'd like to stay with GS if possible as we have a great deal there per slot (one public server, one private, and also a Ventrilo server). But what would you do? BTW, I already intend to try turning off PBBans streaming for a while but don't expect it to help.

Thanks TPU. :toast:

Any thoughts? We have gotten a demo server from GS to test. I'd welcome anyone's experiences if you get a chance to try it out. IP and port are 68.232.177.211:28960.

It sounds like you have a good thing goin with the provider. Can they not just move the VM to a different hardware and keep the IP?

That was exactly my thought. That they could but are refusing to. Any ideas why? Just against their policy?

Um one random thought that comes to mind. They have X hardware in one datacenter that is full. theyd have to migrate you to a different data center which has a different IP range leased to them.

That makes sense, but both servers are in Chicago. Haven't traced it but I assume the same data center.
