Im really thinking about picking one of these 7970s up until nvidia releases some think well worth upgrading to im looking at lowing my case temps a bit also im getting to much hot air blowing into my chipset fan from my 2nd card.

You won't see much of a performance increase but for power and heat alone it'll be worth it. I imagine it'll be quieter too.

You aren't going to gain any major performance increase however power savings will be quite a bit. Really up to you on what you want I would wait it out a little longer and not blow any extra money getting a 7970 the gains are not there for me, but my electrical is part of the rent so I could care less about power usage and my PC is water cooled so case temps are already low...

Cheap window a/c would get my vote cheaper and you can use it every summer.

personally O would hold the fermi's and wait for the new nvidia cards, if nothing else then the ati cards will be a touch cheaper then.

If you aren't afraid of water I'd go with a custom loop, your CPU will benefit from it too.
There's to say that Fermi has always been a power hog and you'd be better moving on but make this assumption, have you encountered any game that isn't playable with 480SLI? Especially at your resolution, 1080p isn't taxing your GPUs.
I know that you are doing this to keep thermals in check but I just think that isn't worth to change GPUs that are made to withstand those temperatures, it will surely feel uncomfortable but it won't be a problem.
If you buy an A/C unit well, your PC is not the only one who will benefit from it :D

Stick with the 480´s and buy two waterblocks/WC Kit.
With water they overclock like hell, stay cool and make nooo noise!

I move my PC around alot so waters not the best things for me thats why i went with a H100 and not a custom loop.

yeah it's never a good idea to give up your heater in winter. Wait till summer when we have a better idea of nv's offerings and all the bugs have been worked out of both platforms (not to mention the premium pricing).

You don't undervolt them? I do and they work great. As much as I would like the 7970 I'm going to hold until Kepler and will see.

I agree with everyone else,
Sell your your 480's and pick up a single HD7970. Power consumption will decrease, sound will decrease and you will see a slight performance increase in performance. Definitely worth the upgrade.

Well the sound will increase because i cant even here my cards with my Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus's installed, And Huddo93 its nice to see another Perth person on the forums. :toast:

May as well pick up a 7970, that way you have the option of crossfire if keplar turns out to be a failure and if it is successful, you could keep the 7970 for a spare/another rig or sell it and buy a keplar card.

I would say go for it.... In terms of performance.... You would probably not loose that much in terms of performance (If anything and especially once you overclocked the 7970). Also the card will run a million times less power hungry and also a million times cooler. Not to mention No Micro-stutter or SLI issues.
Again do it and like others said if Kepler turns out to be crap well then you got a great card. If Kepler turns out to be awesome sell it and get a Kepler or Stick it in another system and grab a Kepler. Or last by then the price should be down just grab another HD7970.

No thanks i like my case as it is also like my HDD trays i have 4 drive, Also thats a waste of cash in my point of view, I ended up selling off one of my cards for $335 on ebay and the 2nd i will keep and swap it with my GF card which is just a normal eVGA 480 with a backplate which ill be selling to a friend, I brought a HIS HD 7970 3GB today got it around $50 cheaper than what there selling for in the shops over here in AUS, Ether way im happy with the path i took also ill be selling of this card which nvidia drops there next card i know but always been a NVIDIA fan boy

Dude slow down, take a breath, and go look at the squealing noise issue thats going on XFX Asus and Shappire HD7970 in many forums (google it I mean)
My XFX 7970 Black Ed Double D is also doing this noise. I cant say that its a "real" problem since the card gives P8380 marks on my PC with a 4Ghz i7 930 and all games runs great but still, it could be a start for future problems.
Your dual GTX480 are running fine now and its not summer yet. So wait for nVidia's card or simply for 7950 and more custom designs of 7970 to buy something. I bought mine 4 days ago for £570 and today I found it on another UK website for £520, already regretted that lol, so u might as well wait for few more weeks.

some people online are saying that the squealing is only caused when you have 100's of fps... i get that with every card... so this could hopefully just be that...
Live OR Die
Jan 22, 2012, 03:06 AM
if any component squeals its normally from a high current going though a capacitor, most old computers like P4s have this sound its normally indicates age and there on there way out which isn't a good thing for a new card.
