Wow, 71 tons of platinum

The last big find was the SS Central America in 1987, carrying 30,000 pounds of gold.

Just FYI, current price of platinum - $1622. Current gold price - $1747
edit: The platinum was intended as payment from the Soviet Union to the United States, he said.
And it's not like the Russians would ever lie about something like that.

It seems odd that something at a relatively shallow depth of 700 ft. wouldn't have been found and salvaged by now... though the ship was probably flying "under the radar" and who may of known of the location when it sunk?
"Brooks said the Port Nicholson was going from Nova Scotia to New York and carrying 71 tons of platinum when it was torpedoed. The platinum was intended as payment from the Soviet Union to the United States, he said.
A federal court judge has granted him the salvage rights, he said."

More twists to the story... it DOES appear that some salvage did take place in the past, and the ownership of the bounty is in question:

He claims they saw platinum ingots at the wreck site (you have to read the story).
