vbulletin mobile app. Allows far easier access to forum when on a smartphone

Feb 20, 2012, 06:54 AM

I don't see the benefit in that, i'm on 4g and like i said i can set TPU as homepage so practically instant access, just need to wake the screen & hit "web" & presto! Could be beneficial for person's on slower network i guess? Am i missing something else
It would need to have some noticeable advantage's/feature's for me to be truly interested, sry W1zz need more info :o

Browsers work fine for me.
Most android apps geared for forums, websites, and such, seem to be no more than links.
And, I create them in the browsers.
Just my opinion.:)
Edit: Unless, I am missing where you are going with the idea...

not sure myself, but at this time this will be for the main site, not the forums

I would mind one. As it stands I kinda don't like the mobile lay out how it is. I switch to desktop mode on my phone its slower but easier to navigate of their was a nice mobile app for TPU I'd use it.

I'd definitely use it but without the forums seems incomplete.
It would help for people like me who can't have full access while at work.

Maybe, some type of widget that is switchable for things like reviews, news, recent posts, pm notifications, new downloads, important info, links, etc.?

IF there was going to be one Android is the logical choice for launch...
those who don't have time to check TPU during daily routine they will appreciate mobile app.

I say if you're going to do it, no app. Just make an equivilent of mobile (http://www.techpowerup.com/mobile/) for the forums. Installing 3rd party software to participate in a website is asinine. The only exception is if the app could do something important web browsers can't be made to do.
All smartphones with a browser can access a website. If you go the app route, you'd have to make no less than three versions using three different languages (Java for Android, WPF/C# for Windows Phone, and Xcode/C for iPhone) and that's a lot of work.

you should enable tapatalk support. TONS of people use tapatalk now.
athlonX2 asked about it a few years ago here on tpu in fact with a decent response.. http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129442
and i got XS to do it 2 years ago... http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?258606-Tapatalk-now-set-up-on-XS

What's wrong with the current mobile version?
It works great on my not-so-smart phone. The lightweight version of the forums works great too.

Ford is right, the app should be web based so it works on most devices. Also, why exclude Windows Phone in the poll?

marketing value. people install lots of apps, they dont install many websites

Fine, then the app is a single browser control that opens the website. Other devices can just visit it manually.

Dear W1zz, please allow posting of polls inside the thread instead of the redirect to the front page. Im sure you can sacrifice a few page hits for this! Thanks!

From this perspective it is a great idea.

I can see a General Nonsense app making you lots of money. :)

an ipad app that cleans up the regular tpu interface would be really nice.

I'm always disabling the mobile interface on almost every site I visit (when it allows me), no different with TPU.
Perhaps in a few years when I need reading glasses, that'll change... but by then we'll all be walking around with HUD helmets surfing the web using voice commands and wondering why we don't have a girlfriend anymore.

The website works fine in mobile form on the ICS stock browser and the desktop version is perfect on the Kindle Fire.
I don't find myself using apps to view individual websites on any of my mobile devices.
The forums can be tricky on both due to the way dialog boxes and other things get resized.

i find it awesome that there is a mobile version of the most awesome forum, but i like the normal desktop version really much, so i allways disable the mobile version, i'm sorry wizz and def's

it's not about the traffic. i tacked on some additional functionality to the vbulletin polls, and for that functionality to work voting needs to be done via the changed voting code, which is only accessible from the frontpage

I wouldn't mind a windows phone app, however, there is no poll option for that.

i would use the iphone app since thats what i have now, but an android app is needed just as badly, due to the greater user base.

i think these never got answered:
same reason as the FB app. some data is pre-stored on the phone (not downloaded every time) making it even faster. saves you on your data cap. less issues with slow loading buttons or images.
features can be customised for the phones - smaller (size and data) ads, seperate options to disable avatars and signatures, etc.

There would have to be a free and donate "ad free" version. Unless youre rooted ads suck!

I'm forever on tpu on my android phone. I have it set as homepage on both my desktop and phone. I like to stay on top of new things. I'm not to into the mobile version tho but thats mainly due to being so use to desktop.
Is there a mobile app yet? I'm confused lol. If not, is there an approximate time frame your lookin at having one out?

I would definitely love and use an android app, preferably with opimisation to run on a 1280x800 screen like a lot of 10" tablets to, and smaller screens for phones.
to me the big issue with a lot of anroid apps is opimisation for these resolutions, as it stands I browse the regular web version on my tablet and the mobile version on my iphone for those reasons.

This has been asked loads of times, everytime it's just been ignored or just rejected.
Pity as i would've used it.
Edit, didn't even see who made the thread. It's about time tbh, this was requested AGES ago.

My phone is fast enough that flash/java aren't really an issue, and most of the time I change the user agent to show me as a desktop anyway to prevent the issues with mobile sites.
I woudn't use it.
But a Hot Girl/Crazy Picture GN app that used TPU servers for caching lower res images would be awesome. Perhaps even an app like that for the reviews here.

I like the function for viewing bigger pics. This things works great on my Galaxy S. Been using it all day at work. This is sooo much faster then having to use the phones browser. Thanks soo much. Will post if I come across any issues.
Thanks W1zz
