somethings to try
1. check the core and the thermal paste..make sure its still fresh and well covered..(you should have some thermal paste on hand when doing this..usually when you remove the heatsink the paste gets messed up and needs re-applied)
2. clean clean clean...clean the entire card...dust collects oil from the air and gets tough to remove..and will become conductive...clean the agp slot too..
3. if he has changed drivers then this happened then uninstall new driver and use older one..
4. brace for the worst..if the above doesnt work then maybe the card is done...this has been a topic here that has come up a few times in the last 2 weeks..all with the same issues and all with the same result...a card going dead..
goodluck hope this help a bit..:rockout:

ok well i have done a few things, he doesnt know much about overclocking but i know he had done sumit with riva tuner ages ago, i cleaned his fan altho the temps were fine!didnt make a difference!
installed the new drivers didnt work installed the stock drivers didnt work!
so had a play arround and lowered it to 300mem and 300 core, i duno what it is stock but this seemed to work! atm, what does this mean if its underclocked? the card is on its last legs?

1. you shouldnt have to underclock it like that...if it was overclocked by rivatuner, then it may have been overclocked to high...if i remember right riva doesnt have an autoclocker...so the clocks could have been beyond a safe limit for that core...what may have seemed a stable overclock could in fact not be safe and damage the core...
2. yes i think this card may be on its last legs...the 3 other people that have had the same questions here in the last 10 days, could use their cards in 2d apps...but in game or 3d apps. it artifacts...we tried everything to help them, and nothing did...sorry...
i was wondering one last thing tho....this wont help you, but it may settle a dispute...what brand is that 9800? i know its an ATI core, but who makes the rest of it??

9800PRO with (R350 or R360) should work at 380MHz or max. 412MHz on th XT model which is very close to th limit of the core (both R350/360). The memory could be different but the limit is app. 400MHz (very modest overclock for the 2.5ns memory).

i have the same card sapphire model and all with a 360core i had the same problem what i found though was that it did it when i tried to flash the card to xt (never found a good bios) and then it happened again with the normal bios i was having a really bad problem turns out one of the retention clips popped out of the board and the hs was only half on. make sure the hs is pushed down real tight those plastic clips are broken and bent easy so chek them especially if youve removed it b4.
