Hmmm... interesting. If it's only adding AGP support for 2K series then that's pretty bland. Still, worth an investigation. Can't be worse than the 7.8's right? ;)

From what i heard the 7.8 was a total disaster and thats why ATI got the 7.9 out so fast...

They were only poor for AGP users, from what I've read from users here and on other forums. I'll give them a whirl tonight. Hopefully they won't suck as bad as the 7.8's.

I heard these are supposed to be Bioshock PC boosters, and that is why they've been released so soon.

Wait. 7.7's sucked bad that's why they released the 7.8's so fast. So the 7.8's suck so bad that the 7.9's are released already? I'm starting to see a trend.

Actually, from what I heard the 7.8's were good, espically for 2600/2900 users. Havent tried them on my 1800gto yet.

No, the 7.8 had many many problems especially for X19, X29 users. Check in their support forums or google it to see.

7.8 Betas work good for me. If I get Bioshock I might have to give these a try.

They aren't leaked. And the softpedia page has the demo up for download, but it is really buggy. It just craps out on you at random points, so don't bother trying to get it thru them now.

I see...

I tried to download them from the link provided but they crapped out at 60% so that was annoying.

Well these drivers didn't work for me. Wouldn't even install. Does say that the 24/2600 are the supported cards. Still, I tired.

I have a x1900xt and 7.8 catalyst, no problems. Bioshock also runs great, there are quickfix drivers for it, don't know if these are the same?

Zero issues here. And they perform better for me, too.

About Final build Catalyst 7.8s i can be another proving person that the CAT 7.8s were bugged. I own a X1950 Pro AGP, after installing the drivers the CCC displayed AGP Reads/Writes and PCI Reads/Writes as off in Smartgart, tried retesting and after restart they would be shut off, i also noticed after the first time installing most icons in Windows were missing with just the shortcut arrows displayed, that occured even after retesting. I decided to Move to 7.6s since i had 7.7s before that and apparently the 7.6 and 7.8s perform the same. To make a statement 7.3,7.6 and 7.7s don't turn off the AGP and PCI Read and Write functions, I'm not sure if thats a bug in CCC or the driver for 7.8s.

Iv been using 7.8 after a clean install of Vista with no issues at all. I also have an HD2900 so it could just be that older cards are affected. Honestly I kinda hope this trend continues.....it gives me a good excuse to my wife to keep upgrading :)

InnocentCriminal

... could just be that older cards are affected.

So far (from what I've seen/read) it's just AGP users that are suffering from the 7.8's. All PCIe users seem to be loving them. :(

second that average performance boost of 5%.

yet 3rd parties of ATI and Nvidia continue to release AGP Cards, Despite being a dated interface both companies make most money off the interface even with higher range boards. I just hope that with Catalyst 7.9s AGP problems are fixed, Performance continues to increase across the board, etc. Also to tell truth ATI doesnt need to release new features constantly.

InnocentCriminal

I agree with you on that fact ATi don't need to release new feature sets constantly - they could spend more time (& money) on refining the ones they have & sorting out the state of their Linux drivers. Then could attempting to implement new features in all sets for he current and last generation cards.

I'm still on 7.7s b/c 7.8 was buggy for me,Sapp x1950GT 256 AGP
seems to be an agp issue. In 7.8 half the icons would not show up, games were just a black screen... :shadedshu :banghead:

eidairaman1
Aug 26, 2007, 03:28 AM
ya that was a problem i was experiencing, which its the AGP writes/reads and PCI writes and reads being disabled the first time the system reboots after driver installs, 7.7s and below didnt have this problem.

So I just tried 7.8 and what a disaster! Missing desktop icons, slow performance etc... Now I'm back to 7.6's and trying to run a registry cleaner to get rid of the 7.8 garbage left behind.

BOTH of you shut up... stop being so immature over something so trivial. Avoid 7.8s If you are using the AGP X1950PRO. However for the normal PCI-E X1950PRO users, GO with the 7.8 Drivers.

Ditto and well Ditto....

7.8's work GREAT for me... Haven't tried the 7.9 beta's yet... Anyone try them on a 1950xt, or better yet a set of em?

If not maybe I'll check them out in a day or two here.

So far, after owning ATi products for over 15 years the 7.8's are the first real major problem I've had with supported drivers. Not too shabby, not even considering they have been aquired from another company and thier former leader is now gone! Has anyone who had problems with the 7.8's had luck with the 7.9's? (I had probs. across the board: missing icons, slow performance, missing colors etc...) And are the 8's going to be a completely new build?

I my self have had no issues with the 7.8 driver but I wont try to speak of every one, Seems each system is effected differantly;)

I'm kind of hesitant to try 7.9 betas, 7.8 betas seemed to treat me well, and now I'm runnin 7.8's. Now to me it seems the 1950's are being faded out of being included in improvements, so has this 1950 generation of cards hit it's peak for drivers? Probably, and if not now, I bet within the next 2 or 3 there will be nothing other than compatability mentioning 1950's and lower.

Which is what they do, can't blame them for trying to make their newer current gen stuff perform better and be more stable.

I'm sticking with 7.8's since they treat me fine, unless I hear more good news for pci-e x1950's...:toast:
