Yeah so my PC is basicly a clean INstall of windows vista with all the updates right and before I did the clean install all my steam games would work like Portal, HL2, HL2 epi1 and 2, TF2 and ect. But recently I decided to go head and reinstall those games so I did and guess what, none of them work. Basicly whenever I double click to open one of those games, I get teh preparing to launch "the game" and then an error message hl2.exe has stoped working. I have no idea how to fix this anyone know and care to tell me.:)

I had this problem... go to the exe, and set in compatibility to windows xp.

You shouldn't need to do that as all my Orange box games run fine on Vista and it sounds like your's use to work before the clean install.
All drivers up to date ?
BIOS updates ?
Any new hardware or anything?
Why did you do a clean install?

If instead of trying to run one of the games, if you just launch Steam, does it connect ok and update ok?

Ok thanks guys, I have managed to fix the problem and a few others at the same time.
If anyone has this problem and cannot fix it this is what you need to do.
Go to the command prompt and type this in:
net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service
Then reboot your computer.
After you run that command you can verify its success by typing in:
net Localgroup Administrators
It should spit out something to this effect:
Administrator
LOCAL
NT AUTHORITY\SERVICE
<Insert your user name here>
The Command Completed Successfully
This also fixed my internet icon in vista, it would never show the globe thingy NOW IT DOES:)

Intersting. I think you can accomplish the same thing by shutting off UAC and running everything as Administror.

never was thanked for the fix... finding it out and so forth.. you probably have had a lot of people look at this thread and see that it worked, but they've never thanked you... so far I've had to do this twice and so I thank you.
