View Full Version : Too popular...?

This is a great website and all, but I feel like we are becoming too big, too popular...
Don't know how many of you have noticed this, but while popularity is a great thing, it also hurts the actual TPU community a little bit. We really can't be silly and fun anymore, except for the general nonsense section, but even there things are being shot down...
Bittersweet isn't it. :(

yeah, the rules are more strict, not as loose as tpu used to be... consequences of fame i guess
but remember, tpu is here to help people with more hardware more then forming a community, and im glad to help as many people i can, though socialization and community is also a big factor. there needs to be a good balance

I hate being politically correct. I don't believe we should be all formal and professional about everything to attract more attention, I think that popularity is good but we shouldn't make it seem like we're something we're not...

Lols, i even often refresh the main page several times just incase someone has replied to xxxxx thread, or made a funny jibe at something or another.
This is not just a technical support or help site, its a place to make friends who share similar interests etc. hells, you are the only guys who are as passionate as i am about computing, i tried explaining it to work mates, but i got blank looks and slight "wtf is he on" expressions :ohwell:

No offense, and I'm not aiming this at anyone specific. But some members get out of control, they start spamming the forums with bullshit, any forum that is. If we wish to be taken serious, attract new members, receive review samples, be mentioned on the box of the new Geforce 9800 über turbo deluxe edition, we need to be taken serious.
As a mod I look at the rules thing from the other side, to me (and I'm not alone) certain members (and no I'm not naming anyone) are out of control. They spam a lot and take a lot of members with them. Unfortunately if we don't put up barriers for these select view a lot of active members will join in on "the fun" and things will get nasty. Controlling a group of 20 by taking one out is easy and doesn't look too bad. However when there are thousands of people, hundreds of daily active members taking out 20 easily looks like we're strict. I don't think we are, I've read many complaints of various members about "site x banned me because I said this and that", I don't think you get banned easily here. If you manage to do so you're obviously out of line, if not you should be able to communicate about this with us mods. If not we were apparently right about banning you.
I can't of course disagree with the statement that growth introduces more rules, but this is necessary. Just imagine a country with as much rules as your school. Or imagine a school with just the (unwritten)rules of your friends club.

What are you talking about? There is more crazy random BS than there ever was when I first joined. I don't understand the appeal of it really though. About the only thing we're even really trying to crack down on right now is the people who want to post pointless one word posts, spam smilies, and all the dating junk; this isn't eHarmony. It is still really simple to get into all the general nonsense. All you have to do is scroll down a little. You have to remember the primary focus of this forum is computer technology, not general nonsense. It isn't even close to the focus of the forum.
There was a time when general nonsense was more general tech nonsense with a little political and philosophical thread interjected on occasion, and a lot less like a place for bored people to go talk about how they farted, got drunk, and had problems with there girlfriend.
There are plenty of social networking sites to goof around on if you want a community that is all about random silliness that is not tech related.
There are still all the spam clubs, and little narrow clubs that only maybe three people qualify for too.
I just don't understand this obsession with general nonsense? Why is it such a huge issue?

i agree with most of what you said thermo. though a social concept is also neccessary, we aren't machines(or computers :p) made to do all of this. as humans, we also need to interact with other people and the person needing help. there should be a sense of community where popular people here know other popular people, and that way people can work together on a problem and what not. so yeah, a loosely modded general nonsense and club section is something that is needed, because many of us do not want to be under very strict rules, almost to the point where its like we're tech support staff at some big company like asus, boringly helping people all day.

You get tons of that though. You're club is basically a teenybopper chat room where you spend more time talking about your sexual encounters than technology; am I wrong? Where can you find a tech forum that lets that much slide? General nonsense and the Club forum represent 16.7% of all posts in the forum. I think that is more than an adequate amount. Nothing. That's why I don't understand why this thread was even created. Somewhere between 10-16% of the forum is not tech related. I think that is more than a sufficient amount. It seems like some people would like this to be a social-tech forum, with over 50% of the posts dealing with their personal lives, chit-chatting about their problems, and meeting e-people who they'll never have a real face to face conversation with.

sure the teen club is a bunch of spam and nonsense, but that again, thats what the club is about. while discussing some tech, we discuss teen matters, and thus its the teen club. some tech forums dont let things like general nonsense slide, whereas tpu does. that is why tpu is popular, no offense, if other forums were more loose, im sure tpu wouldn't be as popular as it is today, keep that in mind. im fine with the way things are run now, (though a few extra mods to help the other mods wouldn't be a bad idea) but im against tightening the rules any further. less then .5% of the people here actually get something material out of tpu, the rest of us are people that are volunteering their time and effort to help others. if tpu turns into a sweatshop so to speak of a bunch of people making boring posts and not interacting much, i would leave. a social factor is important, and as i've said before, there needs to be a balance, and not just everything on one side.

And TPU is fine, let's not start this whole TPU is terrible and needs to change rubbish again.
while tpu isn't terrible, theres always room for improvement in everything. rebellions are what improve things, and it is the duty of the people in charge to respond to the rebellions. history has shown this a billion times already. in a nutshell, i think this was a good idea, its always good to question everything, of course maybe its ideas and stuff, thats different

Yeah, I agree with the minority. But I think it is with the members thinking (and only n00bs think so too, the older mods are keeping their mouths shut, until the other members were like OMG PROBLEM) that that TPU was a bad choice to join and in that case they should leave.

You have been here for a good 5 months. I've been here just under 2 years. While I agree things might need to change, now that the new generation of TPU users have arrives, I think that when we started things were awesome, or actually, they were kickass until people started changing things, and now we have some threads like this that say things are wrong.
@ people who think everything has gone to hell: If you don't like it leave, or a mod can ban you and make the choice for you.
@ pancho, nothing against you man, just stating my point.

TBH - I don't see what the big deal is here, honestly.
Granted, I havne't been round these parts for too long . . . since July, actually - but the amount of tech threads that are started, and very, very quickly responded to it amazing. Some other tech sites, you might not get a response to question for a while.
But, as far as the GN goes - I personally think the mods are very relaxed on the majority of it. Considering how "international" TPU is, and that hundreds of users from across the globe visit this board every day, I'm surprised by some threads in GN that have been allowed to continue . . . the "Do you believe in God?" thread, 2girls1cup, "Is this racist to a black person" . . . WAAAYYY to controversial for this site. A little religious discussion is alright now and then, but some of the comments we've made there shoulda been a no-go.
2girls1cup - IMO, shoulda been removed; no questions asked.
As for the club forum - I think a lot of the "clubs" have recome a little redundant, and that in itself is worse than MS spaghetti code and bloatware. Many of the clubs either need to be merged, have the old ones removed, or otherwise.
Anyway you look at it, though - I don't see what the argument is. This thread is just another waste of server space, IMHO.

it's just mainly pathetic to hear so many complaiints about TPU, I mean does it matter if we create a bunch of clubs that are similar, I mean in a perfect world sure they would all be one clubhouse but this is not a perfect world nor is it a perfect site people. Get used to it. There will always be tiny complaints that I will have for this website but I think that the overall website is worth coming to which is why I was a guest watching all these threads for about 6 months before I even joine:laugh: lol

i think this thread is becoming nothing more than a place for ppl to troll (not naming names) about the clubs and that not ok
just FYI the teen club works well enough for me i have helped a couple of the members in that thread alone and since there are always people there if i dont get a response to my thread i post in that one to get an answer quicker
IMO if you dont like the damn clubs dont visit the club section thats why it was formed so stop all your damn pissing and moaning about something that isnt YOUR problem

This site - from when I first joined - was always both tech and personality. If you lose personality, you've lost the soul.
I know this is about growing pains which is a good thing... but NEVER get rid of general nonsense. I didn't like it when the GN posts were removed from the front page, but there was a lot of crap (I'm guilty too). Those were good times - it was entertainment.
I guess we all have to be thankful that our posts aren't full of ads and the moderators are quite cool ummm, for the most part ;). Try going over to THG and look at the forums there - I swear you are looking at a full-page ad instead of an intelligent or entertaining thread.

i just lurk and get new quotes for my sigs from threads like this.
im not a old member but i have been reading tpu for about 2 years, it has changed but not much, alot of it was like us and them. now that seems to have gone and we all get along. the clubs are just like gangs and they arent good for the whole imho as they segregate the comunity and that can cause friction.
tbth i think the mods do a great job of keeping the bs to as little as pos and they get rid of the idiots as soon as they need too, but we should keep all the funnies and that in the gn and leave the other threads to those who need help, as its giving and getting help that brings us all here. the reviews are great as we can have feedback from those who get there hands on the stuff before we can (hell thats why i got my case) and the software and mirrors are a godsend somedays, damm i just realise how good this site is :D
keep up the good work as we'd all be lost without you.

i came here looking for an answer, i got it and then didn't really plan on staying around, but the tech advice and the chilled out threads that people made encouraged me to stay. I'm learning new things almost daily and finding out loads of new products that i wouldn't have a clue about had i not stayed.
the reviews are awesome! some of the best ones i have seen - seriously you guys do a fantastic job.
the GN threads, some of them are really good. i had a problem and i posted on here not expecting much but then TPU very own thermo 480 came to the rescue.

I am part of an automotive forum that was fantastic until it got publicized in a magazine, and now I don't frequent it because it picked up some bad personalities and scammers in the classifieds. I am one myself, and I've seen this happen so easily:

I completely disagree. I use this forum for tech stuff. If you want a "screw around" forum go somewhere else. If you want to learn and discuss "tech" this is the place to do it. Isn't the general nonsense forum enough? Or, are you just pissed because your "screwing around" stuff on the general nonsense thread doesn't expand your e-penis? I personally think this thread should be closed or moved to the general nonsense thread as it's a distraction from the reasons I'm here in the first place.

Again, I'm in agreement. For general goofing off, telling people to "STFU", obnoxious fanboyism and mouthing off, and similar activities, there are at least several thousand alternatives out there. http://www.hardforum.com seems like a popular destination for those purposes. I can't recommend it enough for people who like "fart threads" and such.

i think we should have another thread asking for ideas to help make tpu as good as it once was, a community of people rather than a bunch of questions and answers
At any given moment there are more than 50 people logged on at once, not very often does it dip below 50 anymore. As I type this there are 117 logged on. This is more than there ever were in the past. Since we attract more people I would argue that Techpowerup forums are better than they ever were.
Quite frankly with a join date of 11-18-2007, not even a month, how would you know what Techpowerup used to be like?
