I asked this in another thread that never got answered but it was in the Games catagory, maybe it will get some attention here :) I don't know much about the X2, but I heard with cards in Crossfire you can use the second to either enhance the image or enhance performance. The 3870 X2 having two GPUs, what levels of AA/AF can you force in CCC, and are there any other enhancements for images that the X2 offers over say a single 3870.

at the moment all u get is the ability to run at a higher resolution.. higher AA and AF than with a single card and maintain the same fps in a given game..
or with a killer like crysis leave the settings lower and gain frame rates..
there is no extra settings with a x 2 card just more power..

The only additional setting really is higher levels of AA, though I assume that's the case with 3870 Crossfire? Going from one 2900XT to a 3870X2 I was able to select 16x AA box filter, whereas on my 2900 the max I could select was 8x AA Box filter.

Because I am stuck with a display resolution of 1360x768 (until I buy a new TV at 1920x1080) I am able to run almost all of my games at 16xAA and 16xAF with V-Sync on and the frame rate stays pretty solid at 60. There are a few that I have to scale the AA back a bit ...cough Crysis cough cough... The images look super crisp even at such a low resolution on a 37" TV with AA and AF cranked.

Just in case you (or anyone else) didn't know, enabling V-Sync locks your maximum FPS at whatever your monitor's refresh rate is. That's why you're getting 60FPS. If you disable V-Sync, you'll get a better idea of the card's performance.

this is so true

I like having my FPS locked at 60 it gets rid of all the image tearing. I am happy that I can enable V-sync without having by FPS constantly drop below 60. On a big screen I find that image tearing looks really bad and besides the difference between 60 and 100 fps is unnoticeable by the human eye anyway.

I never said it would look better at a higher FPS. If you disable V-Sync, you can get an idea of the card's true potential. Either that or the 1080P TV. That'll be a nice challenge for it too :toast:

I dont know if there is visual enhancements over the standard 3870 but i do know this my friend had Nvidia cards inc the gtx and the writing on his lcd was always poor and blured and had to use software to try to correct it best he could when he switched to ati its was crystal clear.
Now i remember back in the day when nvidia was blasted by ATI and annoyed users for fiddleing there drivers to give higher but false benchmark scores against ati cards scores by dissableing some lower level quality settings and other codeing etc.
This was around the time when the fx cards were on the market.
And i basically dont trust them anymore.

Next time make sure your friend disables ClearType in display properties...
"Poor and blurry" nVIDIA turns magically into "crystal clear" and wonderous ATi:

Come on, Companies may not be living people, but they can still be more trustworthy than others. Some companies are more concerned about their customers than others, just because it's "inhuman" doesn't mean you can't trust it, there's people behind companies and it seems a lot of people agree with ATi being more "trustworthy" than nvidia based on the actions they take. "we'll take your money and barely support you" comes to mind with nvidia, I still don't understand why they don't release drivers more regularly. *that doesn't count betas*

When ATI and Nvidia are battleing it out especially if sales are down nothing suprises me.

kylew,
Atleast for the past 6 months nV has been releasing official WHQL drivers more than 1 version / month... If you include the betas it's almost 1 driver per week.

Im not anti Nvidia i used to love the geforce titanium cards they were the buisness at the Time.
But then after upgrading to a slow ass fx5600 ultra card and that driver scam came to light i later upgraded to a x1900xt and boy was i amazed the preformance and overall picture quality was amazing i still have the card now lol.But ive stuck with ati ever since regardless of benchmark scores i just try to buy higher end stuff to avoid dissapointment.
my 3870x2 was a great investment.
